Assistant Building Engineer
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Assistant Building Engineer provides the highest standards of museum maintenance, safety, and management for the Museum’s visitors, programs, and staff. The Assistant Building Engineer’s primary responsibilities are the operation, repair and maintenance of the Museum’s building systems (HVAC, BMS, Vertical Transport, Fire and Life Safety, Security, and Electrical and Plumbing); supervision of building system contractors, vendors and service providers; and assisting the Chief Maintainer, Facility Director, Director of Security, and other museum staff as required. The Assistant Building Engineer reports to the Building Engineer. The position’s standard schedule will primarily consist of evening and weekend shifts. During the first two months of employment, flexibility to work daytime hours will be required to support effective onboarding and training. Upon successful completion of training, the schedule will transition to regular evening and weekend shifts.
Primary Responsibilities/Tasks:
- Monitor building systems using BMS, local indicators, visual inspections, and routine patrolling.
- Perform routine maintenance on HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, assist with repairs as needed.
- Organize and maintain mechanical spaces and workshops.
- Maintain supply inventory, tools and equipment.
- Inspect and maintain fire and life safety systems per FDNY Rules.
- Perform duties related to events, public programming, and other special projects as needed.
- Emergency response coverage as required.
Qualifications:
- Basic electrical, mechanical, plumbing proficiency.
- Basic computer literacy with email, calendar management, Microsoft Office.
- Previous experience in a commercial facility in NYC required.
- Must have or be willing and able to obtain the following FDNY Certificates:
- S12 City Wide Sprinkler System
- S13 City Wide Standpipe System
- S95 Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems
- F60 Fire Guard for Torch Operations
- F01 Fire Guard Impairment
- F78 Maintenance of Smoke Detector
Special working conditions may include but are not limited to:
- Heavy Lifting
- Working at heights
- Accessing confined spaces
- Using ladders
- Bending
- Lift up to 80lbs
- Use of power tools
