Salary Range:
$50,000-$65,000

Description

To foster a culture of learning, Academic Coaches inspire and empower teachers to become equity-focused instructional decision makers. Academic Coaches work closely with teachers to discover and implement best practices, including data-driven instruction and needs-driven interventions. Academic Coaches also identify and coordinate curricula that align with state standards and provide job-embedded coaching for teachers and teacher teams as well as whole-staff professional development. Academic Coaches possess integrity, demonstrate a strong work ethic, and maintain accountability for their actions. Academic Coaches align themselves with NMA’s core principles and understand the unique challenges of immigrant and refugee communities.

Academic Coaches’ areas of responsibility include the following:

Curriculum Coordination: In partnership with teachers and administrators, Academic Coaches identify and coordinate curricula that align with state standards.

  • help identify priority standards and map, pace, and unpack standards with teachers
  • facilitate a scope and sequence process (vertical and horizontal curriculum alignment)
  • align supporting curricula to courses and grades
  • support unit and lesson planning
  • recommend curriculum needs to administrators

Instructional Leadership: Academic Coaches inspire and empower teachers to excel instructionally.

  • model effective instructional strategies, especially those strategies that support ELLs
  • coach around the implementation of research-based instructional strategies
  • understand and model the principles of the science of reading
  • support the implementation of PBIS strategies and social-and-emotional learning strategies
  • conduct classroom observations to determine instructional strengths and opportunities
  • partner with administrators to prioritize the instructional needs of the school

Data Development and Use: Academic Coaches facilitate data-driven instruction.

  • collaborate with administrators to develop data and instructional dashboards
  • train teachers to administer common assessments and collaboratively review assessment results
  • train teachers to utilize data to support instructional decisions
  • review weekly, quarterly, and annual data to drive academic achievement
  • partner with administrators to leverage classroom observation data to identify instructional opportunities

Intervention Leadership: Academic Coaches support Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions.

  • model a growth mindset
  • train teachers to reteach differently and individualize learning by effectively differentiating
  • use data to identify students for interventions
  • design effective Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions and progress monitoring systems

Professional Development: Academic Coaches provide job-embedded coaching and professional development opportunities.

  • coach individual teachers and teacher teams
  • facilitate orientation and provide ongoing support for new teachers
  • facilitate learning for grade-level teams and department teams
  • provide instructional feedback
  • facilitate peer-observation opportunities
  • identify and develop professional learning opportunities
  • partner with administrators to respond to the instructional needs of staff

Other duties may be assigned related to academics.

Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in education required
  • Experience teaching middle school required
  • Master’s degree in education preferred
  • Previous school leadership or educational coaching experience preferred

Salary : $50,000 - $65,000
