The Infectious Disease Epidemiology Bureau in the Center for Health Protection provides infectious disease epidemiology and public health surveillance services, case and outbreak investigations, and data analyses statewide for the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH). The work is authorized by the New Mexico Public Health Act and governed by the New Mexico Administrative Code (7.4.3.13) Notifiable Diseases or Conditions in New Mexico. Programs in the Bureau include (but are not limited to) Foodborne Diseases, Zoonotic Diseases, HIV and Hepatitis, Healthcare-associated Infections, Data Informatics and Emerging Infections.

Why does the job exist?

The HIV and Hepatitis Surveillance Program Epidemiology Supervisor protects the health of New Mexicans by conducting and supporting program team members in conducting public health surveillance activities for HIV and viral hepatitis. This position will also coordinate and collaborate with NMDOH programs in the Center for Healthy and Safe Communities, Public Health Division as well as external stakeholders in support of HIV and Hepatitis C prevention, testing, and linkage to care activities.

How does it get done?

The individual hired in this position will:

  • Provide epidemiologic, data management, and statistical analytic expertise and support to program team members in performing HIV and viral hepatitis public health surveillance activities.
  • Support program staff in maintaining and enhancing the reporting of HIV and viral hepatitis in order to accurately describe the epidemiology of HIV and Hepatitis C in New Mexico.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with and communicate HIV and viral hepatitis surveillance data to internal and external partners to facilitate tailored prevention, testing, and linkage to care activities.
  • Respond to clusters and outbreaks of HIV infection identified through time-space analyses to control and prevent further disease transmission.
  • Support efforts to eliminate Hepatitis C in New Mexico through collaboration and coordination with internal and external partners.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other Program Managers in advancing shared IDEB goals and objectives.

Who are the customers?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Infectious Disease Epidemiology Bureau, as well as the health care community and public. This is a statewide supervisory epidemiologist position focused on the surveillance and epidemiology of HIV and viral hepatitis.

Ideal Candidate

Ideal candidate will have 2 or more years of experience in public health surveillance and 4 or more years of postgraduate experience in data management and analysis using SAS or R statistical software, as well as experience linking data among multiple data systems. The candidate should be skilled in complex data analysis, interpretation of results and presentation of findings to different audiences. The candidate should be team-oriented and adaptable to changing work processes and environments.

Minimum Qualification

Master's Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Sciences, Social Sciences, or Statistics and two (2) years in Public Health to include data analysis and linking methodology. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage.
