What are the responsibilities and job description for the Direct Support Professional/Companion position at New Hope Housing?
As a Companion, your role involves accompanying individuals on various community outings, it may include, but are not limited to:
- Shopping trips (grocery stores, retail shops, farmers' markets)
- Fitness and wellness activities (gym, swimming, adaptive sports)
- Outdoor recreation (parks, nature trails, botanical gardens, zoos)
- Educational visits (libraries, museums, science centers, historical sites)
- Entertainment and leisure (movies, bowling, amusement parks, arcades)
- Social gatherings (community events, festivals, concerts, support groups)
- Dining experiences (restaurants, cafés, food truck events)
This position requires a commitment of 5-6 hours per day, 3-4 days a week. A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are essential.
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assisting with personal hygiene
- Engaging individuals in recreational activities
- Supporting individualized goal programs
- Operating a company vehicle/van to transport individuals
To qualify, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Have at least one year of experience in a medical, psychiatric, nursing home, child care setting, or working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Be at least 18 years old and legally eligible to work in the United States.
- Successfully pass a Level 2 background screening and drug test.
- Hold a valid Florida driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Be physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs., walking, bending, squatting, and performing other movements necessary for the role.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
- Possess basic computer skills for data entry and documentation.
