POSITION OVERVIEW
The Controller is a key member of the leadership team, responsible for the full financial health and reporting integrity of the organization. This role partners directly with executive leadership to drive financial strategy, maintain rigorous controls, and provide timely, accurate reporting that supports smart decision-making in a high-growth environment. The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting leader who thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial culture.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Reporting & Month-End Close
• Prepare and deliver accurate monthly financial statements, including Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, and Inventory/Work-in-Progress reports
• Lead the full month-end and year-end close process for New Home Inc. and New Home Inc. Realty entities
• Prepare bank reconciliations, GL account reconciliations, and all month-end journal entries
• Deliver monthly close reporting package with supporting schedules and detailed actual vs. budget variance analysis
• Serve as primary liaison for the annual assurance review and tax return preparation
Budgeting & Business Planning
• Develop and manage the company-wide annual budget and business plan
• Monitor and manage monthly cash flow to support operational needs
• Prepare preliminary job cost budgets and pre-sale loan requests
• Prepare and oversee shared billing/invoicing with affiliated Development and R&R entities
Accounts Payable & Payroll
• Supervise the Accounts Payable function and AP Specialist; approve check runs processed on the 1st, 10th, and 20th of each month
• Manage and process bi-monthly payroll including commissions, reimbursable expenses, new-hire 401(k) eligibility, healthcare deductions, and termination prorations
• Manage new hire enrollments and terminations for healthcare benefits and 401(k)
Cash & Lender Management
• Serve as the primary point of contact for all lender relationships
• Oversee and coordinate annual Line of Credit renewals
• Supervise all aspects of cash management, including tracking construction draw availability and timing draws to support payroll, lot deposits, check runs, and operating expenses
• Transmit contracts, foundation surveys, and permits to lenders per bank requirements
Lot & Home Closings
• Manage coordination and scheduling of construction loan and lot loan closings
• Review and approve all HUD settlement statements within one week of closing date
• Reconcile ERP final sales price with final Contract Modifications at home closings
• Process Contract Memos and manage the House Closing Schedule on a weekly basis
Insurance
• Manage all company insurance policies, including General Liability, Workers’ Compensation, Umbrella, Builders Risk, and Health/Dental
• Coordinate new Builders Risk policy starts aligned with each lot closing
• Oversee annual insurance renewals and provide year-end data for GL and Builders Risk audits
QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA preferred but not a requirement
• 5 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, with at least 2 years in a controller or senior accounting leadership role
• Experience in homebuilding, real estate development, or construction accounting strongly preferred
• Proficiency with construction or job cost ERP systems; experience with MarkSystems by ECI or similar homebuilder platforms a plus
• Strong command of GAAP and financial reporting standards
• Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; comfortable presenting financial data to executive leadership
