Casual Part Time Customer Service

Position Information

New Hanover County Public Library is looking for a casual part-time Customer Service staff member to engage with the public and provide a welcoming library experience. This position will work all service points (reference, circulation, and children's) at the Northeast Library branch. As the primary point of contact for library services, this position requires extensive interaction with patrons, both in-person and by telephone. In addition, this position answers basic questions and refers patrons to other resources as needed. Good interpersonal skills, friendliness, and a positive attitude are essential for this position.

Essential Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Informing patrons of library programs and services
• Assisting with Library opening and closing procedures
• Using the integrated library system (ILS) to process materials and register patrons
• Accurately shelving library materials.
• Answering inquiries or referring inquiries to the appropriate service desk

Hours:

This position will work a varying schedule each week to meet the needs of the location, including regularly working every fourth weekend (Saturday 10-5, Sunday 1-5) Minimum of 8 hours per week with potential for up to 19 hours per week.

Libraries are open Mon-Thurs 10am - 7pm; Fri-Sat 10am - 5pm; and Sun 1pm - 5pm.

Casual Part Time, non-exempt

Salary Information:

The hiring salary for this position starts at $17.4639/hr. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

• High school diploma / GED and one year of frontline customer service experience. (e.g. retail, food service, or hospitality)

Required Skills and Knowledge:

• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Proficiency using computer technology
• Ability to quickly grasp and use new concepts
• Attention to detail
• Flexibility in scheduling
• Willingness to adjust to a constantly changing work environment

Preferred Skills and Knowledge:

• Experience working with youth ages birth-18.

Physical activities and demands:

• Spends up to several hours a day in a stationary position to assist customers
• Frequently moves and positions bins of books which weigh up to 30 pounds
• Frequently transports large numbers of books to various locations in the building
• Positions, places, and removes books and other library materials around, onto, and from shelves at a wide range of heights
• Communicates and exchanges information and ideas with customers and coworkers throughout the workday
• Operates a computer, cash register, and other electronic devices throughout the day

Other Information

In compliance with G.S. 153A-94.2(b), if this position requires an applicant for employment to work with children in any capacity, the county must require the applicant to undergo a criminal history record check conducted by the SBI for all offers of employment made after October 1, 2025. These checks must be performed in accordance with G.S. 143B , which authorizes the SBI to provide fingerprint-based state and national criminal record checks to cities and counties. Additional information on how to complete this required check will be provided to the selected candidate after an offer of employment is accepted.
