New Era Fiber Splicing is a leading utility construction firm specializing in underground infrastructure. We are currently seeking an experienced and safety-driven Directional Drill (HDD) Operator to join our crew. In this role, you will operate horizontal directional drilling rigs to install underground utilities (fiber optics, coax cable) with minimal surface disruption.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate directional drilling equipment (Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or similar HDD machines).
  • Perform underground bores for fiber optic conduit, cable placement, and utility installation.
  • Read and interpret construction prints, bore plans, and utility locates.
  • Locate and pothole existing utilities prior to drilling.
  • Monitor drill path using tracking systems to maintain proper depth and alignment.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections on drilling equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on drill rigs and support equipment.
  • Coordinate with locator, laborers, and foreman to ensure safe job execution.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety standards.
  • Maintain daily production logs and job documentation.
  • Restore job sites and ensure proper cleanup after completion.

Experience & Education

  • Experience: 1–3 years of experience operating HDD drill rigs in utility construction.
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
  • Licenses: A valid Driver’s License is required.Skills & Knowledge
  • Technical Proficiency: Deep understanding of drilling fluid mixtures, soil conditions (rock, clay, sand), and bend radii of different pipe materials.
  • Blueprint Reading: Ability to interpret utility maps, construction plans, and grade stakes.
  • Safety Mindset: Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, trench safety, and utility strike protocols.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

  • Outdoor Work: Ability to work in all weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, rain, mud).
  • Physical Stamina: Capable of lifting up to 50–70 lbs., bending, climbing onto equipment, and standing for long periods.
  • Travel: Willingness to travel to various regional job sites as required by the project.

Pay: $25.00 - $33.00 per hour
