Lifeguard - Y-ki

GENERAL FUNCTION

Works under the direction of the Sr. Director of Aquatics and Camp Director. Lifeguards will promote safety, conduct patron surveillance, and act swiftly and professionally in emergency situations.

KNOW-HOW

• Hold and maintain First Aid/CPR/AED, Lifeguard, and Waterfront certifications from the American Red Cross.
• Advanced knowledge of swimming, aquatic safety, and lifeguarding.
• Proficient knowledge in problem solving, communication, and critical thinking.
• Have the following characteristics: reliable, mature, courteous, consistent, positive, honest, respectful, responsible, caring, and professional.
• Minimum 1 year of lifeguarding and aquatic instruction preferred.
• Minimum 1 year of Waerfront experience preferred.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES

• Ensure member safety and protect lives, including your own life.
• Work a minimum of 10 hours per week including a minimum of 2 mandatory weekend shifts per month. Substitute lifeguards will work a minimum of 1 shift per pay period (every 2 weeks).
• Be in uniform on deck during shift (includes guard shirt, shorts, rescue tube, walkie-talkie, whistle and hip pack).
• Actively conduct surveillance of the pools and the members in the pools.
• Initiate the emergency action plan when an emergency occurs and provide care for victims as trained.
• Enforce all pool rules, policies, procedures, and guidelines.

• Perform opening/closing cleaning duties when scheduled for opening/closing shifts.
• Must be in appropriate uniform, on deck, and ready to perform all duties prior and during assigned shifts.
• Be rescue ready when performing duties as a lifeguard.

• Be timely for scheduled shift. Be at least 10 minutes early for scheduled shift.
• Report all accidents/incidents to the Aquatics Director.
• Attend staff meetings and engage in staff trainings.
• Maintain and keep all certifications current.
• Perform other duties as designated by supervisor.
• Job description may be changed at any time by supervisor.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to:  climb, kneel, reach, push, swim, crouch, stand, pull, grasp, navigate stairs, stoop, crawl, walk, lift, talk, hear, and sit. The employee may occasionally need to exercise these physical labor demands:  exert 60-100 pounds of force occasionally and 20-40 pounds of force frequently.  Acute hearing is essential to this position.  In this position, this person will occasionally be required to work in outside weather conditions.

Lifeguard will:

• Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.

• Attend required abuse risk management training.

• Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.

• Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.

• Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.

Requirements include:

• American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate or equivalent.
• Ability to swim continuously for 300 yards.
• Perform all tasks necessary for water rescue.
