Position Title: EEG Technician
Department: Clinical Operations
Reports To: Clinical Manager
FLSA: Exempt

Position Summary

The EEG Technician is responsible for high-quality electroencephalogram (EEG) studies and works collaboratively with physicians and clinical staff to support accurate neurological assessment, testing, and patient care. This role ensures accurate data acquisition, patient safety, and adherence to clinical, regulatory, and quality standards across inpatient, outpatient, and long-term monitoring settings. The EEG Technician will support related neurodiagnostic or patient monitoring services consistent with departmental training and competencies.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Clinical & Technical Duties
    • Perform routine, extended, ambulatory, and continuous EEG studies according to established protocols and physician orders
    • Apply EEG electrodes using the International 10-20 System and maintain appropriate impedance levels
    • Monitor EEG readings in real time, identifying and documenting significant waveform changes and clinical events
    • Perform activation procedures (hyperventilation, photic stimulation, sleep deprivation) as ordered
    • Maintain accurate and complete documentation within the EEG system and electronic health record
    • Prepare EEG recordings and preliminary observations for physician interpretation
  • Cross-Service Support
    • Support additional neurodiagnostic or patient monitoring services such as, but not limited to, Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) & Transcranial Doppler (TCD), as needed based on operational needs and training
    • Participate in cross-training and competency development for additional services as required
  • Patient Care
    • Educate patients and families on EEG procedures in a professional and compassionate manner
    • Ensure patient comfort, safety, and privacy throughout the procedure
    • Recognize and respond appropriately to patient distress, seizures, or adverse events
  • Equipment & Environment
    • Maintain, troubleshoot, and disinfect EEG equipment in accordance with policy and infection control standards
    • Ensure supplies are stocked and equipment is calibrated and functioning properly
    • Report equipment issues or safety concerns promptly
  • Compliance & Quality
    • Adhere to hospital policies, infection control standards, HIPAA regulations, and accreditation requirements
    • Participate in quality assurance initiatives and performance improvement activities within NMA.
    • Maintain competency and continuing education requirements

Qualifications & Requirements

Education, Licenses/Certifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Graduate of an accredited EEG or Neurodiagnostic Technology program.
    • Registered EEG Technologist (R.EEG T.) or equivalent credential (ABRET), preferred.
    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Experience

    • 1 years of EEG experience preferably in an acute care or outpatient setting.
    • Experience with long-term monitoring (LTM) or ICU EEG, preferred.
    • Familiarity with electronic medical records and EEG acquisition software, preferred.
    • Ability to recognize normal and abnormal EEG patterns (within scope).

    • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Working Conditions

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials; use of protective clothing required.
  • May include inpatient units, outpatient clinics, ICU, or epilepsy monitoring units
  • Occasional travel to healthcare facilities in urban and rural areas.
  • Variable work schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and availability during non-scheduled work times.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Ability to stand, turn, and stoop in an operating room
  • Ability to drive or commute as needed.
