We are seeking a highly strategic and execution-oriented Executive Director of Strategic Sourcing & Procurement to build and lead a best-in-class procurement function within a fast-growing life sciences organization. This leader will design and scale procurement as a value-creating business function that delivers cost optimization, operational efficiency, transparency, risk management, and strategic vendor partnerships across the enterprise.
This role will be responsible for end-to-end sourcing, procurement, contract negotiation, vendor management, process design, spend governance, and procurement analytics—serving as a strategic partner to Finance, Legal, Operations, R&D, Clinical, CMC, and Commercial teams. The ideal candidate combines deep life sciences domain expertise with strong commercial acumen, financial rigor, operational discipline, and systems thinking.

Strategic Sourcing & Vendor Management
- Build and execute enterprise-wide sourcing strategies across key spend categories (e.g., CROs, CDMOs, clinical services, IT/SaaS, professional services, lab suppliers, manufacturing, facilities, and corporate services)
- Develop category strategies, preferred vendor programs, and competitive sourcing frameworks
- Lead RFPs, RFQs, and vendor selection processes for high-value and strategic initiatives
- Establish long-term strategic supplier partnerships while maintaining competitive tension
- Implement vendor performance management frameworks and scorecards
- Lead complex commercial negotiations, including pricing models, rate cards, MSAs, SOWs, and multi-year strategic agreements
- Partner with Legal to standardize contracting frameworks, templates, and risk controls
- Drive contract value protection through pricing controls, audit rights, change order governance, and renewal management
- Implement contract lifecycle management and renewal optimization processes
- Design scalable procurement processes across intake, sourcing, approvals, purchasing, contracting, and payment
- Build governance models, delegation of authority frameworks, and spend controls
- Develop standardized procurement workflows that balance control with operational speed
- Implement best-in-class P2P and sourcing systems and tools
- Drive continuous process improvement through process mapping, automation, and optimization
- Integrate procurement with financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and capital allocation processes
- Support business development and strategic initiatives through commercial due diligence, cost modeling, and vendor strategy
- Partner with Finance on cash management, burn rate optimization, and runway extension
- Deliver cost savings, cost avoidance, and value realization programs
- Build strong cross-functional partnerships with R&D, Clinical, CMC, Operations, IT, and Corporate functions
- Build procurement analytics and reporting capabilities including spend visibility, contract coverage, vendor concentration, budget vs. actuals, and risk exposure
- Develop executive dashboards and KPI frameworks
- Enable data-driven decision-making across sourcing and spend governance
- Establish spend classification taxonomies and data standards
- Identify and mitigate vendor, supply chain, financial, regulatory, and operational risks
- Implement procurement controls, audit trails, and compliance frameworks
- Support SOX-ready and audit-ready procurement operations
- Manage single-source risk, supplier dependency, and supply continuity strategies
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required in business, supply chain, procurement, engineering, finance, life sciences, or a related field.
- MBA or other advanced degree preferred.
- 13 years of progressive experience in strategic sourcing, procurement, and supply chain leadership
- Deep experience in life sciences, biotech, pharma, or medical technology
- Proven Expertise in: Strategic sourcing, contract negotiation, commercial deal structuring, vendor management, process design and optimization, project management, procurement systems implementation, and spend governance
- Strong financial acumen, including forecasting, budgeting, cost modeling, and financial analysis
- Demonstrated ability to build functions from the ground up
- Track record of delivering measurable cost savings and operational improvements
- Executive-level communication and stakeholder management skills
- Preferred: Experience in high-growth environments; experience supporting clinical-stage and commercial-stage operations; background working cross-functionally with Legal, Finance, R&D, Clinical, and Operations; experience implementing procurement and contract lifecycle management systems
