What are the responsibilities and job description for the Boat Captain / Whale Watching / Snorkel Charters position at Net Zero Expeditions?
Job Overview:
We are currently seeking enthusiastic Captains to drive our 21' Zodiac on our daily whale and dolphin watching excursions and our 6 hour shark and ocean safari experiences. As a Captain with NetZero Expeditions, you will play a key role in ensuring the safety and enjoyment of our guests while providing commentary on the diverse marine wildlife encountered during our trips.
There is ample space for growth in this position as, we also cater for the natural history filming industry. If you love being outdoors, witnessing nature; whales, dolphins and other megafauna this is an ideal position.
Our ideal candidate:
- A seasoned captain with a USCG 50-ton near coastal captain's license or greater.
- Experienced with at least 2-3 years under your belt, ideally with a background in scuba diving. (Don't be discouraged if you don't have experience or only have a OUPV, we might be able to make exceptions for the right candidate)
- A people person who thrives on making others feel safe and valued.
- Highly flexible, ready to work weekends and holidays
- Always show up with a positive, can-do attitude.
- Proficient in maritime safety, vessel maintenance, and navigation.
- Comfortable with physical activities and working in various weather conditions.
Our Ideal Candidate:
- You have Knowledge of marine wildlife (Training available)
- Knowledge of San Diego offshore and wildlife localization.
- You are a divemaster, freediver or have in water experience.
- You know how to fly a drone and have a part 107 license.
- You have advanced mechanical and electrical systems knowledge.
- Hold additional certifications like EMT, STCW endorsement, or Marine Radio Operator.
This Role May Not Be Suitable If:
- You find it challenging to work weekends and early mornings.
- You adopt a 'that’s not my job' attitude.
- You prefer working independently or tend to avoid guest interactions.
- You are not located in San Diego, CA.

Responsibilities:
- Operate our 21' Zodiac vessel on daily whale watching excursions, ocean safaris and shark snorkeling tours.
- Ensure the safety of guests and crew members while navigating various ocean conditions.
- Share your knowledge of marine wildlife with guests to enhance their experience.
- Communicate effectively with guests to ensure their safety and enjoyment throughout the excursion.
- Prepare the boat for each excursion, including fueling and cleaning after the final trip of the day.
- Safety briefing.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $30.00 - $33.00 per hour
Expected hours: 20 – 40 per week
