What are the responsibilities and job description for the Product Software Engineering Specialist 4 - Power Electronics position at Neon Aerospace?
Aerospace is at a turning point — costs are rising, supply chains are strained, and old ways of building can't keep up. At Neon Aero, we're breaking that mold. We move fast, think big, and combine start-up agility with aerospace expertise to design, build, and scale aircraft in ways the industry has never seen. Our team leverages automation, AI-driven tools, and a fully connected digital backbone to accelerate innovation and reduce barriers to production.
Here, you won't just take a job — you'll help reinvent how the world flies. If you're ready to solve complex problems, push technology further, and work alongside some of the brightest minds in aerospace, this is your chance to make a real impact.
The Product Software Engineer 4 is a pivotal role that drives the development of highly optimized, mission-critical software for power electronic converters and distributed control systems. Equally important is establishing processes to ensure the software complies with aviation standards and certification requirements.
Why This Role Matters:
- Lead the complete software development lifecycle for motor control and power control applications, including design, implementation, testing, and deployment of embedded software and firmware for PMSM motors, DC/DC converters, or real-time distributed control systems.
- Architect and guide the creation of scalable, maintainable control and platform software supporting real-time control, communication, and diagnostics.
- Drive innovation by researching emerging motor and power control technologies, algorithms, and software tools to enhance product capabilities and efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with aviation industry standards and safety regulations (e.g., DO-178C, ARP 4754/4761).
- Mentor and coach software engineers, fostering skill development and best practices in embedded programming, algorithm design, and system integration.
- Collaborate closely with hardware and systems teams to align software designs with evolving hardware and system requirements.
- Define detailed software requirements, design specifications, and project milestones, ensuring alignment with business goals and compliance objectives.
- Lead technical design reviews, code reviews, and performance optimization efforts to guarantee high-quality, reliable software.
- Perform additional responsibilities as needed to support team and project success.
What you'll Bring:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical discipline; equivalent professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Minimum of 8 years of professional experience in embedded software development specializing in motor and power control applications, with at least one product launch.
- Strong expertise in motor and power control algorithms including Field Oriented Control (FOC), Proportional-Integral (PI) control, and DSP algorithms.
- Deep knowledge of microcontroller HW architectures (e.g., STM32, TI C2000, NXP) and communication protocols (CAN, Ethernet, SPI) designed for functional safety.
- Proficiency in embedded C/C programming, real-time operating systems, and low-level hardware interfacing.
- Proven leadership experience managing engineering teams and driving project delivery on schedule.
- Familiarity with system modeling and simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, as well as hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) testing.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, root cause analysis experience, and performance optimization capabilities.
- Curiosity, drive, and a willingness to challenge convention and move quickly.
- Passion for aerospace, autonomy, and building technology that scales.
Why Join Us:
- Work alongside elite engineering talent and innovators from across aerospace and tech
- Be part of a team moving faster than the industry standard
- Shape solutions that are lower-cost, autonomous, and scalable – the future of aviation
- Competitive compensation - including equity participation, growth opportunities, and full benefits (health, dental, vision, 401k) designed to support you in and out of work.
