Position Summary The Head Men’s Tennis Coach is responsible for providing leadership, vision, and strategic direction for the College’s men’s tennis program. As part of an athletics department that sponsors 25 varsity sports and supports nearly 700 student-athletes, the Head Men’s Tennis Coach plays a critical role in advancing the College’s mission by fostering an environment of competitive excellence, academic achievement, personal development, and inclusive team culture. This position is full-time and reports to the Director of Athletics. Secondary duty to be determined.

Key Responsibilities

Coaching and Player Development

  • Plan, organize, and conduct all team practices, training sessions, and skill-development activities.
  • Develop and implement training plans that enhance student-athlete performance while prioritizing health, safety, and well-being.
  • Provide in-game coaching and strategic decision-making to enable the team to compete at the highest level, in and out of conference competition.
  • Conduct video review, performance analysis, and other analytical methods, as well as individualized coaches for continuous program improvement.
  • Establish team standards, expectations, values, and culture that align with the athletic department and the College.
  • Work with strength and conditioning staff to create training programs to maintain appropriate preparedness to meet the demands of the sport.
  • Attend appropriate continuing education to stay up to date on knowledge, safety, and technique.

Recruitment and Talent Identification

  • Identify, evaluate, and recruit highly qualified student-athletes who are aligned with the College’s academic and competitive standards.
  • Build and maintain a roster of recruited student-athletes.
  • Coordinate and execute all recruiting activities, including contacts, campus visits, communications, and collaboration, maintaining a critical relationship with the Office of Admissions.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with prospective students, families, high school and club coaches, and other external partners.

Student-Athlete Mentoring and Support

  • Serve as a mentor and primary support resource for student-athletes.
  • Promote academic success by collaborating with faculty, advisors, campus support services, and the Director of Student-Athlete Success.
  • Cultivate a team environment grounded in integrity, respect, and personal accountability.
  • Lead the holistic development of program’s student-athletes, including leadership skills, resiliency, and community engagement.
  • Expectation of being present, on campus, for your student-athletes throughout the academic year.
  • Represent the program and the College to students, parents, community, alumni, and the general public.

Leadership and Administration

  • Manage all day-to-day program operations, including scheduling practices and competitions, organizing team travel, and coordinating other items with appropriate athletics staff and leadership.
  • Oversee program budget to include travel, equipment, officials, and recruiting expenses, as well as equipment procurement and inventory.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional, conference, and NCAA rules and policies, as well as state and federal guidelines.
  • Assist in departmental initiatives, community outreach efforts, and special events as needed.
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches, student-workers, and other program personnel.
  • Make appropriate recommendations to athletic administration about maintenance concerns and enhancement needs for facilities.
  • Secondary duty will be assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics, or designee.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Previous coaching or playing experience at the collegiate level.
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications will be required upon start.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge and coaching skills of the sport of tennis and its playing rules.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills that allow for the ability to teach, motivate, and counsel student-athletes effectively.
  • A commitment to the Division III philosophy.
  • A commitment, and ability, to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • High integrity and ethical standards required.
  • Enthusiasm for the mission of Centre College and Centre Athletics.
  • Knowledge of NCAA and SAA rules.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, retain, and mentor student-athletes.
  • Self-motivated, positive, energetic, eager to teach, and a willingness to travel
  • Ability to foster a team environment as well as the ability and desire to work successfully within a team-oriented athletic department.
  • Fully embrace and practice the department’s priorities of Recruit, Educate, Train, Compete, and Inspire.

Physical Requirements

  • Some pushing, pulling, and lifting required. Required handling could be 25 pounds or more.
  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to drive a car with valid driver’s license required prior to appointment, and maintained throughout.
  • Visual acuity to read computer screens and reports.
  • Work, as appropriate, nights and weekends.
