Position Overview

The Human Resources Generalist plays a vital role in supporting the Hilton Head Preparatory School (the School) mission by caring for the people who make our work possible—our faculty and staff. Serving approximately 110 employees, this position supports the full employee lifecycle, ensures that current human resources practices reflect the school’s values, commitment to excellence, and dedication to a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative school community. The Human Resources Generalist is a trusted partner to employees and leaders, providing thoughtful guidance, operational support, and compassionate service to both our faculty and staff, as well as our families.

Key Responsibilities

Human Resources Operations & Employee Support

  • Serve as a welcoming and reliable first point of contact for faculty and staff regarding Human Resources related questions and needs.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential employee records while upholding the highest standards of professionalism and discretion.
  • Support compliance with current employment laws and school policies to ensure a safe, fair, and ethical workplace.

Recruitment, Onboarding & COBRA

  • Support the recruitment of faculty and staff who align with the school’s mission, values, and educational philosophy.
  • Coordinate onboarding and orientation experiences that help new employees feel prepared, supported, and connected to the school community.
  • Manage COBRA (offboarding) processes with care and professionalism, ensuring appropriate documentation and updating applicable HRIS system.

Employee Relations & Growth

  • Provide guidance to employees regarding Human Resources policies, benefits, and procedures with empathy and clarity.
  • Support supervisors in regards to performance review processes and documentation that encourage professional growth and accountability.
  • Assist with employee relations matters, fostering respectful communication and positive problem-solving, and escalating concerns as appropriate to the CFO.

Benefits, Payroll & Leave Support

  • Assist with administration of employee benefits programs, including enrollments, changes, and employee inquiries.
  • Collaborate with the CFO to ensure accurate compensation.
  • Responsible for accurate leave tracking and employee data.
  • Support the CFO during open enrollment; be able to support benefits communications in a clear, accessible, and supportive manner.

Policy, Training & Compliance

  • Assist with maintaining and updating the employee handbook and Human Resources policies to reflect best practices and school values.
  • Coordinate required trainings, certifications, and compliance programs that support employee success and student safety.
  • Responsible for the completion of accurate background checks, mandatory reporting, and compliance documentation.

Culture, Community & Engagement

  • Contribute to initiatives that promote employee well-being, engagement, and a sense of belonging.
  • Assist with staff events, recognition efforts, and professional development activities that strengthen community and morale as needed.
  • Partner with leadership to support a workplace culture grounded in respect, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Register School vehicles in coordination with the Director of Security and Transportation.
  • Assist with the financial audit as needed.
  • Act as a backup for Receptionist.
  • Support the School’s leadership with other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field required.
  • 2–4 years of experience in human resources, administration, or a related support role required.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a service-oriented mindset.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and care.
