QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum:
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with special education endorsement in one or more of the following: Learning Disabilities (SM), Emotionally Impaired (SE), Physically or Otherwise Health Impaired (SE), Autism Spectrum Disorder (SV) or Cognitively Impaired (SA).
- Experience developing and implementing systems for students impacted with special education needs.
- Demonstrated skills in differentiating curriculum for students with special education needs as well as creatively providing options for them to access the general education curriculum.
- Experience creating a positive, engaging classroom environment that is conducive to learning and growth.
- Ability to proactively teach appropriate behaviors and expectations to students as well as be able to work with the school team to design and implement positive behavior supports.
- Instruct and integrate daily living skills required for independent living and self-management into the students’ classroom activities and experiences within the building.
- Demonstrate a willingness and tenaciousness to seek out parents and work collaboratively with them in the best interest of the student and their education.
- Ability to understand the students’ unique needs as a result of their disability and to educate others relative to understanding the student’s educational requirements and needed adaptations.
- Experience evaluating academic and social growth to prepare progress reports and adjustments to instruction delivery.
- Work directly with classroom assistants relative to job expectations, planning for students, implementing systems and supports, appraisal of performance, etc.
- Work closely with general education teachers to support student inclusion in the general education classroom via understanding the implications of the disability and working with the typical students for increased understanding.
- Ability to work as a team member with general education and ancillary staff to creatively support the students.
- Ability to consult and collaborate with outside professionals on an ongoing basis to promote the well being of the students.
- Understanding of the importance (as well as demonstration) of teacher-student engagement to promote a positive learning culture for students at risk of failure. Ability to articulate and demonstrate skills of engagement.
- Commitment and dedication to a growth mindset culture and an environment of continuous innovation and improvement.
- Exhibits the ability to develop IEPs utilizing relevant, precise and measurable data.
- Technology-proficient including experience with web-based resources, lesson planning, and assessment tools.
- Training in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or commitment to complete CPI training upon hire.
Preferred:
- Previous special education teaching experience working with students at this grade level.
- Proficiency in classroom assessment and data analysis.
