What are the responsibilities and job description for the Geologist position at Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC)?
The Navy’s NAVFAC EXWC Command is looking for a geologist/hydrogeologist with a strong groundwater modeling background to augment the existing groundwater remediation and groundwater resource development expertise in the Environmental Restoration Division. The objective of this division is to help the Navy find, clean up, and preserve drinking water (groundwater) sources at installations and in surrounding communities. This division provides technical support to the field teams at the Navy’s Superfund sites for the cleanup of legacy contaminated sites. The division also prepares proposals for testing and evaluation of new and innovative technologies, as well as methodologies and models for the treatment of soil, groundwater, and sediment impacted by common contaminants like petroleum, chlorinated solvents, and PCBs, as well as emerging chemicals like PFAS and 1,4 dioxane. A smaller, but growing, line of work is groundwater resources development, which includes technical support to installations that are developing or managing groundwater supplies within their larger communities, through projects like managed aquifer recharge. The selected candidate will be expected to help grow these technical areas. The position is located in Port Hueneme, CA near Los Angeles. Some travel to Navy sites across the U.S. and, occasionally, abroad is required. Work environment is demanding, but flexible. Projects require both independent effort and teamwork. The selected candidate will work on multiple interesting and challenging projects with an inter-disciplinary and highly-motivated group of engineers, geologists, toxicologists, and other scientists. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Qualifications:
A M.S. in geology or hydrogeology, with a strong groundwater flow and transport modeling background, as demonstrated by coursework, thesis topic, and/or project experience, is essential. A PhD is desirable but not required. One to two years of employment experience with field exposure is desirable but can be forgone for a highly qualified graduate or shortly graduating candidate. The candidate’s references should be able to attest to the candidate’s critical thinking, oral and written communication skills, teamwork, and ability to multi-task. Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time.
