Duties

You will install, repair, inspect, operate, maintain, and service specialized heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems and refrigeration equipment systems.You will maintain and service compressed air generating, drying and oil removal equipment for pneumatic controllers and monitoring devices.You will perform modifications and tests on controls.You will calculate air flow, and the pressure temperature characteristics for different systems in order to locate and repair faulty equipment swiftly and to reduce inoperative time to minimum.You will maintain and test water treatment chemical equipment (conductivity controllers and chemical feed pumps).You will read blueprints, complex drawings, sketches, wiring diagrams, manufacturing specifications and technical materials.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: THE ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION. Your resume must show that you have the ability to perform common tasks including: 1) Interpreting instructions, specifications and blueprints to repair air conditioning and refrigeration systems; 2) Troubleshooting air conditioning and refrigeration system operations to detect component malfunctions; and 3) Installing and repairing a variety of large commercial and industrial refrigeration, and air conditioning equipment. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Mechanic must be able to become CPR certified. By law, all persons with access to a system or container that stores refrigerant, including A/C coolant such as R-22 or R-410A, must have Universal Certification received from an EPA approved certifying program. Certification card must be carried on person while in a duty status. The card shall be presented upon request. Any change in certification status, any Clean Air Act Section 608, 40 CFR 82 violations, EPA fines or pending EPA investigations must be reported at once to the direct supervisor and department head. Decertification may be grounds for dismissal. Mechanic must possess the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 608 certification exam (Universal) as a pre-qualification for this wage grade. Mechanic must be able to become certified in Confined Space Safety, Backflow Prevention, and Refrigerant Recovery

This position is being recruited for the Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) and may subsequently be realigned under the Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC). This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program. Several vacancies may be filled.
