Overview
Position Summary:
The Communications Specialist plays a key role in creating high-quality content that supports the association’s publications, digital platforms, and external communications. This position is responsible for writing and editing magazine articles, press releases, website content, newsletters, and marketing materials, ensuring all communications are accurate, engaging, and aligned with organizational standards. Additionally, the Communications Specialist assists with media inquiries to strengthen the association’s visibility and industry presence.
Responsibilities:
Creates high quality content for the association magazine, websites, press releases, and marketing materials. This work may include, but is not limited to:
· Writing magazine articles using strong journalism practices;
· Writing press releases, newsletter content, and marketing copy to support external communication needs;
· Interviewing subject-matter experts with professionalism to gather insight and develop high-quality content;
· Developing article ideas and content based on strong knowledge of the industry and member areas of interest;
· Responding to inquiries from other media outlets and industry related organizations;
· Preparing press releases for publication to media;
· Producing the magazine’s weekly e-newsletter;
· Building relationships with sources and industry experts.
Supports the production of videos, podcasts, photo materials and association presentations. This work may include, but is not limited to:
· Creating slide presentations for association events;
· Coordinating photography needs at events and managing photo lists;
· Editing and preparing materials for videos and podcasts;
· Collaborating on consumer and trade media inquiries;
· Participating in editorial planning meetings and providing updates on story status.
Proofs and edits materials for the organization. This work may include but is not limited to:
· Conducting first-round edits for magazine articles, newsletter, website content, and marketing materials;
· Editing contributed content to ensure clarity, accuracy, grammar, and adherence to editorial standards;
· Assisting with proofreading during the magazine production cycle and other communication initiatives.
Post content on the association website. This work may include but is not limited to:
· Posting magazine articles and communication materials to the website in a timely manner;
· Ensuring content is formatted correctly for readability and user experience.
Collaborates on the creation of the content calendar and ensures timelines are met. This work may include but is not limited to:
· Communicating deadlines and expectations to contributors, internal team members, and SMEs;
· Coordinating deadlines for articles, website updates, newsletters, and publication milestones;
· Drafting communications for consumer and trade media inquiries under short timelines;
· Tracking projects to ensure content is delivered on schedule for publication.
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in communication, journalism, marketing, public relations, or related field.
· 1 to 3 years of experience in communications, journalism, marketing, or media;
· 1 years of experience interviewing subject matter experts to create content;
· Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills;
· Extremely organized and detail oriented;
· Familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of WordPress, Canva, email management systems (such as Constant Contact), and Adobe Creative Suite is a plus;
· Strong time management skills and ability to meet deadlines;
· Team player and willingness to learn new programs and skills.
Pay: $52,858.63 - $63,657.71 per year
