What are the responsibilities and job description for the Horizontal Boring Mill Machinist position at National Tube Supply?
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Horizontal Boring Mill Machinist to join our team at our Dover, OH facility. In this role, you will be primarily responsible for setting up, and operating a large horizontal boring mill, but may be asked to run manual lathes when needed. You will work primarily on machining large, high-precision components—including mechanical tube parts and heavy industrial blocks—ensuring strict adherence to technical blueprints and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Setup & Operation: Plan and efficiently set up and operate large horizontal boring mills to perform tasks such as milling, drilling, tapping, fly cutting, and boring.
- Blueprint Reading: Interpret complex technical blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) symbols to determine dimensions, tolerances, and machining sequences.
- Precision Inspection: Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using precision measuring instruments (e.g., micrometers, vernier calipers, bore gauges, dial indicators) to maintain tight tolerances.
- Material Handling & Rigging: Safely load and align heavy parts, mechanical tubing, or castings onto the machine bed or fixtures using overhead cranes and hoists.
- Daily Maintenance: Perform routine preventative maintenance on machinery, monitor fluid and coolant levels, and ensure a clean, safe workspace.
Qualifications & Skills
- Proven Experience: Experience setting up and operating Horizontal Boring Mills in a heavy manufacturing environment.
- Tooling Mastery: Expertise in selecting appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, inserts, and calculating correct feeds and speeds for different materials (steel, alloys, heavy tubing).
- Rigging Experience: Competence in operating overhead cranes and utilizing proper rigging techniques for large, heavy components.
- Analytical Skills: Strong mathematical skills, mechanical aptitude, and a sharp eye for detail.
