Dog Care Technician (PT - AM Shift)
Reports to: Dog Care Supervisor

Position Summary
National Mill Dog Rescue is seeking a compassionate, dependable Dog Care Technician to join our team. This role is essential in ensuring the health, comfort, and well-being of our rescued dogs. Technicians will be cross-trained in both opening and closing shifts and will work closely with staff and volunteers to perform essential daily care, facility upkeep, and enrichment tasks.
Key Responsibilities
Daily Animal Care
- Feed dogs according to dietary needs and schedules.
- Administer prescribed medications (oral, topical, injectable) when trained and document treatments accurately.
- Ensure dogs have clean, filled water bowls at all times.
- Observe and report any changes in behavior or health concerns using established protocols.
- Perform thorough welfare checks and confirm dogs are in correct locations and safely housed.
- Provide daily enrichment activities to promote mental and emotional well-being.
- Leave calming music at appropriate volume levels as instructed.
Facility & Cleaning Duties
- Maintain clean, sanitary kennel environments using approved procedures for both indoor and outdoor spaces.
- Ensure all runs have appropriate bedding and are odor-free and low stress.
- Assist with laundry, spot cleaning, and general sanitation.
- Turn off heating/cooling units and secure the facility during closing shifts.
- Lock all doors and conduct a final walkthrough at the end of day shifts.
- Monitor and report inventory needs for dog-related supplies.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all safety procedures and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
- Promptly report any safety concerns or incidents.
- Adhere to all organizational and animal handling protocols.
Teamwork and Communication
- Work collaboratively and professionally with staff, volunteers, and visitors.
- Interpret and follow signage regarding medical and behavioral needs of dogs.
- Accept additional duties and training as assigned by the supervisor.
Customer Service
- Provide kind, professional service to visitors, adopters, and volunteers.
- Positively represent National Mill Dog Rescue’s mission, values, and programs at all times.
Volunteer Support
- Engage respectfully and effectively with volunteers.
- Support a positive volunteer experience, recognizing their contributions to our mission.
Qualifications and Experience
- Prior experience in animal care, rescue, or a related field required.
- Experience as a vet assistant is a plus.
- Proficient in administering various medications and handling shy, fearful dogs.
- Familiarity with canine body language and behavior assessment.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Strong communication and time management skills.
- Must be 18 years or older with a high school diploma or GED.
- Must be a team player with a compassionate, reliable work ethic.
Physical Requirements
- Must be comfortable working in noisy, odorous, and potentially emotionally challenging conditions.
- Frequent lifting (up to 35 lbs regularly; 50 lbs occasionally).
- Repetitive physical tasks including scrubbing, bending, walking, and kneeling.
- Ability to walk and handle dogs of various sizes and temperaments.
- Regular exposure to cleaning chemicals, allergens, and airborne particles.
- Use of cleaning equipment including hoses, buckets, mops, and squeegees.
- PPE is required and will be provided.
Pay: $15.75 - $16.50 per hour
