The Opportunity
National Development (ND) seeks a Chief Engineer to lead our engineering team. You will directly supervise, guide, and coordinate team members for over a million square feet of office and retail space in Burlington, Massachusetts. Reporting to Property Management, you set technical direction, oversee maintenance and engineering, and ensure excellent service for tenants and owners. You must be highly skilled in general maintenance, lead a hands-on team, and work closely with property management to support tenant satisfaction and operational excellence.

Chief Engineer – Burlington, MA
The Opportunity
National Development (ND) seeks a Chief Engineer to lead our engineering team. You will directly supervise, guide, and coordinate team members for over a million square feet of office and retail space in Burlington, Massachusetts. Reporting to Property Management, you set technical direction, oversee maintenance and engineering, and ensure excellent service for tenants and owners. You must be highly skilled in general maintenance, lead a hands-on team, and work closely with property management to support tenant satisfaction and operational excellence.
As a Chief Engineer, your primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Set and communicate engineering strategy, vision, and roadmap for the portfolio with asset and property management, providing expert advice on operational risk, capital planning, and asset management.
- Lead, directly supervise, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of engineers and service providers, setting clear expectations and facilitating communication within the team.
- Oversee and optimize property maintenance, building systems, and vendor management operations. Ensure safety, compliance, and operational excellence.
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance and sustainability programs across the portfolio. Maintain standards for documentation, inspections, and work order resolution.
- Track and improve energy efficiency by overseeing the Energy Star Portfolio Manager and utilization of Measurabl, or comparable ESG data platform.
- Act as the primary escalation point for emergencies, major system overhauls, and strategic operational decisions.
- Collaborate closely with property management and other business units to ensure alignment with ND’s business objectives and tenant satisfaction.
- Keep the Senior Property Manager advised of all matters incidental to the operational status, major projects, and casualties to all systems.
- Manage emergencies and promptly address urgent work orders, including on-call duties.
- Deliver exceptional customer service and act professionally with tenants and team members.
- Foster a culture of exceptional customer service, sustainability, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in all engineering operations.

- Proven senior-level experience leading engineering teams, ideally in commercial real estate.
- Expertise in HVAC, building maintenance, and engineering best practices with a strong knowledge of Massachusetts building codes, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Demonstrated history of developing high-performing teams and implementing process improvements.
- Ability to analyze complex technical problems, manage capital projects, and drive operational efficiencies.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
- Experience with building management systems, experience with Angus a plus.
- Exceptional communication, leadership, and organizational skills; able to interact effectively with tenants, owners, vendors, and executive leadership.

- Attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality work.
- Physical ability to perform manual tasks and lift heavy equipment.
- Valid REAL ID driver's license and clean driving record.
