About NanoVox
At NanoVox, we’re pioneering the next generation of gradient refractive index (GRIN) optics—a revolutionary leap in optical and photonic design. Our proprietary additive manufacturing (AM) process enables the rapid, overnight fabrication of complex optical components with performance and cost advantages unmatched by traditional methods. Join us as we redefine what’s possible in imaging, sensing, and optical systems.
The Role
We are seeking a Senior Staff Scientist in Optical Metrology to lead the development of advanced metrology tools and techniques for GRIN optics. This is a high-impact role at the intersection of optics, materials science, and precision metrology, where your work will directly influence the evolution of next-generation optical technologies.
You will design, develop, and implement both hardware and software systems for characterizing additively manufactured GRIN optics across the visible to short-wave infrared spectrum. Collaboration is key—you’ll work closely with interdisciplinary teams and customers to innovate, automate, and refine our optical measurement processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and specify metrology tools and processes for 3D GRIN optics, materials and manufacturing workflows.
- Automate and script optical measurement routines to improve efficiency and repeatability.
- Perform and analyze advanced optical measurements, including:
- Point Spread Function (PSF) and focal plane characterization
- Digital holography and 3D refractive index reconstruction
- Power Spectral Density (PSD) analysis and wavefront aberration evaluation using Zernike polynomials
- Conduct statistical analyses to ensure data accuracy and reproducibility.
- Model optical elements and manufacturing processes to optimize performance.
- Design and execute experiments, develop computational models, interpret results, and prepare detailed reports and presentations.
- Support proposal and report development for commercial and government programs.
- Uphold high standards of integrity, safety, and laboratory excellence.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. or M.S. in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline.
- Proven experience in optical metrology, optical design, or photonics instrumentation.
- Proficiency in Python for automation and data analysis.
- Hands-on experience with interferometry, wavefront sensing, and optical testing equipment.
- Strong understanding of statistical methods and data interpretation.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines.
Benefit Skills
- Experience with digital holography, phase interferometry, and GRIN metrology.
- Familiarity with lens materials, tolerancing, and optical manufacturing workflows.
- Experience preparing government or commercial proposals.
Benefits
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k) plan with company match
- Paid time off (vacation, sick leave, holidays)
- Floating holidays and flexible scheduling options
- Collaborative, innovation-focused work environment
Why Join Us
This is an excellent opportunity to join a cutting-edge R&D environment focused on pushing the boundaries of additive manufacturing and optical technologies. You’ll be working in a fast-paced, innovation-driven space with the chance to grow professionally in a multidisciplinary team.
