Utilities / Boiler Operator Helper

II. POSITION OBJECTIVE: To assist the Utility Operators and learn the correct procedures and techniques for efficient operation and preventive maintenance of all utility equipment and systems.

III. QUALIFICATIONS: Must have a High School Diploma or G.E.D. certification. Good math, science, and chemistry education is preferred. Must be able to demonstrate his/her mechanical ability to identify problem areas, and take positive corrective action (ie: grease, lubricate, tighten fittings, etc.)

IV. TRAINING: Minimum of Two ( 2 ) years on the job training at this Utility Operator Helper Level, with continuous training in the Utilities Operator 3rd Class level, as openings become available.

V. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. TASKS AND DUTIES

1. Learn all aspects of the utilities dept, plant associated equipment including operation and maintenance.

2. Assist in Maintaining all Utilities equipment.

3. Study and understand proper operating, work instructions and maintenance procedures.

4. Keep Utility areas of responsibility clean.

5. Study equipment manuals and understand the operation, function of all utility systems and associated equipment.

6. Must be able to be contacted by plant during non-scheduled hours.

7. Work overtime to assist in completion of scheduled, preventive maintenance, or emergency repairs.

8. Follow all safety policies and procedures.

9. Learn and follow work order instructions.

10. Assist in taking all readings on Utilities Equipment including but not limited to: Natural gas, City, Pure Water meters, Hot Water Boilers, Hot Oil Boilers, Chill Water System, Cooling Water System, Compressed Air System, and record on proper log sheets and log books.

11. Assist in Utility Operator in all job aspects.

12. Assist the Utility Operator to perform preventative maintenance of all utilities related equipment.

13. Other work assigned by Foreman, Supervisor, or Department Head.

B. MACHINERY, TOOLS, AND ELECTRICAL DEVICES USED

1. Hand tools used on a daily basis.

2. Two-way radios used on daily basis.

3. Temperature controllers used on a daily basis.

4. PH slide comparitor used on a daily basis.

5. Alkalinity controllers used on a daily basis.

6. Liquid metering pumps used on a daily basis.

7. Power tools used on a weekly basis..

8. Manual drum dolly used on a weekly basis.

9. Forklift used on a weekly basis.

10. Grease gun used on a weekly basis.

11. Tape measure used on a weekly basis.

12. Use a telephone on a daily basis.

C. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIRED

1. Climbing, ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.

2. Balancing, maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces.

3. Stooping, bending body downward and forward by bending spine and waist.

4. Kneeling, bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.

5. Crouching, bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.

6. Crawling, moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.

7. Reaching, extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

8. Standing, particularly for sustained periods of time.

9. Walking, moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances.

10. Pushing, using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.

11. Pulling, using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

12. Lifting raising objects from a lower to higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. DEGREE OF LIFTING: 51-100 pounds.

13. Grasping, applying pressure to an object with

fingers and palm.

14. Feeling, perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

15. Talking, Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word.

16. Repetitive motions, substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.

D. VISUAL ACTIVITY REQUIRED

1. Machine operation and skilled trades, use of lathes, drills, presses, power tools where seeing at a job is at or within arms reach.

2. Mobile equipment operations, operate cars, trucks, buses, fork lifts, cranes and high lift equipment.

3. Other criteria based on accuracy and neatness of work.

4. Position requires individual to differentiate colors, depth and perception.

E. WORK ENVIRONMENT CONDITIONS

1. Inside and outside environments apply.

2. Subject to extreme cold, temperatures below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

3. Subject to extreme heat, temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

4. Subject to noise, causing reason to shout in order to be heard above the noise level.

5. Subject to hazards such as moving machinery, electrical currents, falling debris, exposure to chemicals, gases, high heat or explosives.

6. Subject to oils and other cutting fluids.

VI. AUTHORITY/DECISION MAKING: Reports directly to Utilities Foreman/Supervisor, and is controlled by company policies and

procedures.
