Title: Instrument Test Engineer
Nature of Role: The Instrument Test Engineer is based at Nabsys’ Providence, RI headquarters and is responsible for executing structured hardware and software test protocols on the OhmX instrument platform, a novel technology in the next-generation sequencing space focused on high-resolution DNA mapping. This role centers on formal, specification-driven testing of a complex electro-mechanical, fluidic, and optical instrument, and requires regular presence in our laboratory facility. Title and level will be determined based on the candidate’s background and experience; we welcome applications across a range of career stages.
Responsibilities:
- Execute hardware and software test plans against written specifications, recording results, deviations, and defects with clarity and consistency
- Operate the instrument to run biological samples, including precision low-volume sample handling with micropipettes

- Develop test cases, test scripts, and validation protocols as the product evolves covering positive, negative, and regression scenarios. Contribute to design reviews and provide QA perspective on testability and acceptance criteria
- Maintain accurate records in accordance with quality system requirements, including SOPs, test logs, and traceability documentation
- Communicate findings clearly to cross-functional teams across hardware, software, and applications
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, or a related technical or scientific field
- Three or more years of professional test engineering experience on hardware and software systems, medical devices, or scientific instrumentation
- Demonstrated experience executing structured test plans, verification and validation (V&V) protocols, or formal test case documentation against written specifications
- Hands-on proficiency with micropipettes and basic sample handling for low-volume, precision work
- This is not a remote or pure software QA role; candidates whose background is exclusively in SaaS or software quality assurance without hands-on experience testing physical hardware or handling samples will not be a strong fit
Nice to Haves:
- Master’s degree or higher in a relevant technical or scientific discipline
- Wet lab experience, including work with genomics, next-generation sequencing library preparation, or DNA/RNA sample handling
- Experience testing complex electro-mechanical instruments involving fluidics, optics, or precision motion systems
- In-depth knowledge of software testing methodology, test development, and test tooling
- Experience with source control, continuous integration, and automated testing methods (e.g., Git, Bitbucket)
- Familiarity with bug-tracking tools such as Jira or GitHub Issues
- Experience in a regulated or quality-managed environment (ISO, GMP, or similar)
