Native Plant Gardener I

Position Summary

The Gardener I (G1) position is for an experienced gardener with hands-on experience working with Florida native plants and the ability to recognize, care for, and maintain plants within established gardens.

G1 Gardeners perform skilled, plant-focused work including plant identification, selective pruning, cutbacks, weeding, monitoring plant health, and maintaining gardens according to established plans and MDG standards.

Requirements

• Previous hands-on experience working with native plants is required
• Practical gardening, horticultural, nursery, ecological landscaping, or related field experience
• Working knowledge of plant identification and proper plant-care practices
• Ability to distinguish desirable plants, seedlings, and new growth from undesirable vegetation
• Ability to perform selective pruning, cutbacks, weeding, planting, and routine garden care
• Strong observation skills and attention to detail
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and established scopes of work
• Reliable transportation and dependable attendance
• Ability to communicate clearly and work independently or as part of a team
• Physically able to perform hands-on gardening work throughout shifts of up to 8 hours
• Ability to work outdoors in Florida weather conditions, including heat, humidity, sun, and rain

Responsibilities

• Identify native plants and distinguish them from undesirable plants and emerging desirable growth
• Perform selective pruning, clipping, deadheading, cutbacks, and other plant-specific maintenance
• Weed established native and edible gardens while protecting desirable seedlings and natural regeneration
• Monitor plants for stress, pests, disease, nutrient deficiencies, and other changes
• Maintain garden structure and appearance while respecting each plant’s natural growth habit
• Install and relocate small plants as assigned
• Apply mulch, soil amendments, and other garden materials
• Safely and properly use hand tools and applicable power equipment
• Document and communicate field observations, concerns, and completed work
• Work independently on assigned tasks and collaboratively with the Field Services team
• Follow property-specific instructions, established scopes of work, and MDG field procedures
• Participate in native garden installations, including planting, soil preparation, mulching, and other installation-related fieldwork as assigned.

Qualifications

• Previous hands-on experience working with native plants
• Practical gardening, horticultural, nursery, ecological landscaping, or related field experience
• Working plant-identification knowledge and ability to learn additional species
• Strong observational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately
• Reliable, punctual, and effective communicator
• Physically capable of performing hands-on gardening work throughout shifts of up to 8 hours
• Able to work outdoors in Florida weather conditions, including heat, humidity, sun, and rain

Compensation

• $16–$19 per hour, based on demonstrated native-plant knowledge, gardening experience, and field competency
• Performance-based bonuses available based on individual and company performance
