What are the responsibilities and job description for the Project Engineer position at Murrelektronik North America?
About Us:
Murrelektronik is a global automation company headquartered in Oppenweiler, Germany, with US headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, providing connectivity and control solutions to industrial automation customers worldwide. Data Panel, a Murrelektronik subsidiary based in Plymouth, MN, designs and manufactures embedded electronic control systems for mobile equipment, serving both on-road vehicles, such as utility and emergency vehicles, and off-road machines, such as construction and agricultural machinery. This role splits time evenly between the two organizations, supporting engineering projects at both Murrelektronik and Data Panel.
Job Summary:
We are looking for an experienced engineer and project manager to lead day-to-day projects with our domestic product development engineering teams and coordinate with our product development teams in Germany. In this role, you will plan, coordinate, and track cross-functional engineering projects that bring new electronic controls and connectivity products from concept through production. You will maintain project schedules, manage engineering utilization across electrical, firmware, and mechanical disciplines, and drive our engineering release and change management process. This is principally a coordinator role without direct reports, and exceptional organizational skills and tactful communication are the two most important success factors—more so than depth in any one technical specialty. For the right candidate, this position is a natural stepping stone into engineering management. This role reports to the Director of Mobile Systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Planning & Scheduling (60%)
- Build and maintain Gantt charts and project plans in Monday.com for new product development projects that conform to our ISO 9001 stage gate process and checklists
- Identify dependencies and critical path; track risks, escalate issues, and drive resolution
- Track progress against schedule and scope; adjust project plans as needed and communicate changes to stakeholders
- Manage engineering utilization across electrical, firmware, and mechanical disciplines; plan and sequence tasks to balance workload and meet project commitments
- Run recurring project meetings and stand-ups; drive accountability on action items and remove blockers through coordination with other business functions
- Coordinate design reviews, product certification, and documentation releases
- Partner with manufacturing and supply chain to plan prototype builds, pilot runs, and production ramp
- Create and update project status dashboards in Monday.com
Engineering Release & Change Management (20%)
- Own and administer the engineering release and Engineering Change Order (ECO) process
- Drive ECOs through the approval workflow for new product releases and changes to existing products
- Train engineers on the ECO process and serve as the go-to resource for release and change management questions
Process & Continuous Improvement (20%)
- Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes, templates, and project management practices in accordance with ISO 9001
- Integrate and enforce new product development processes as necessary
- Help establish and enforce consistent use of project management tools and documentation standards
Minimum Qualifications:
- Exceptional organizational skills — a proven track record of keeping complex, multi-workstream projects organized, documented, and on schedule.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, industrial, or a related engineering discipline
- 3 years of engineering work experience in electrical, mechanical, or industrial engineering
- 2 years of project management experience leading cross-functional engineering projects
- Experience taking new products from design through production release as part of a project team
- Proficiency with Gantt charts and project planning tools (e.g., Monday.com, Microsoft Project, or similar)
- Experience with engineering design change management software (ECO/change control), such as Arena, Windchill, or similar
- Ability to hold people to commitments without formal authority
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and track progress across parallel workstreams
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience using Monday.com for project management and resource planning
- Experience managing engineering projects involving embedded electronics and/or mechanical enclosures
- Hands-on experience administering and driving ECOs in Arena PLM
- PMP certification
- Experience with stage-gate product development processes
- Experience developing products for mobile equipment or industrial controls
- Experience working with external suppliers and contract manufacturers
