Job Summary
The Staff Drilling Engineer will fill a key role in the Global Wells Team leading well planning and daily operations support. They will be responsible for designing fit-for-purpose well plans to achieve the objectives safely and cost-effectively. Primary tasks include performing design and operational risk assessments, generating detailed plans and procedures, working with procurement and contract teams, applying best practices, performing after action reviews, assisting in problem solving during well operations, and working within the regulatory framework on permitting of wells.
The Staff Drilling Engineer will work in our Houston Corporate office and may work up to two (2) days a week remotely, as business needs allow.

Responsibilities
- Leads well design through planning phase, operations, and post well close-out with strong technical results, delivering as per schedule.
- Able to work within multi-disciplinary team to successfully design well to achieve objectives.
- Develop time and cost estimates for scoping estimates and AFEs, continually tracking actuals against planned.
- Perform associated engineering tasks independently such as directional planning, casing design, and regulatory screening.
- Lead and support multi-discipline peer reviews, HAZOPS, DWOPS, CWOPS, Risk assessments, etc.
- Perform lookbacks/after action reviews of operations to continuously improve on operational/cost efficiency.
- Review and apply best practices and lessons learned to all operations
- Leads post well reviews – capturing actual technical data, performance, lessons learned, and cost / equipment reconciliation.
- Responsible for ensuring area regulatory standards are adhered to throughout.
- Coordinate with supply, quality assurance, and service providers to ensure operations are fully supported.
- Support adherence to Global D&C Standards.
- Work with the Procurement and Contract Teams to develop bid packages and evaluate same
- Assist in problem well reviews/troubleshooting to derive solutions and achieve objectives
- Mentor and train junior engineers
- Champion safety and quality performance
- Represent Murphy on Non-Op GOM projects
- Lead quarterly reviews w/Service Providers
- Perform peer benchmarking and Industry Trend reviews
- Willing to attend and be able to pass HUET (Helicopter Underwater Egress Training)
- Well Control Certification
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering
- Minimum 15 years Engineer experience in oil and gas industry
- Minimum 10 years of deepwater drilling and completions experience
- Competent in deepwater casing design, drill string design, cementing, and all other standard well planning and design activities
- Ability to work in a team and positively influence others
- Strong HSE commitment
- Strong communication, teamwork, self-initiative, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to adapt to changes and new challenges
- Prepared to work in a fast-paced work environment with an emphasis on risk management, timely delivery, cost consciousness, interactive work style, and sound execution
