Job Summary

This strategic leadership role leverages data, analytics, and AI to drive business value, foster a data-driven culture, and ensure effective governance and use of data assets and the broader data ecosystem across our global operations. The role bridges technology, business strategy, and operational execution—overseeing analytics and AI capabilities and the teams that enable data-driven decision-making, automation and AI across the organization. Your expertise in data science, automation, and AI will help build robust analytical systems, generate business insights, and optimize operations. Working with cross-functional teams and diverse datasets (drilling, production, subsurface, environmental, safety, and financial), you will lead the team responsible for business intelligence visualizations and applied analytics and AI tools that support transparent, timely decision-making. You will manage cross-functional projects, lead the adoption of new technologies, and serve as a primary liaison among IT, OT, and technical teams to ensure Murphy’s data and AI strategies are communicated and implemented effectively. By building and developing Murphy’s data science team and toolset, and maintaining a strong understanding of key business drivers, you will drive meaningful operational improvements across field operations and corporate processes.
The Director of Data, Analytics and AI will report to the CTO in our Houston Corporate office and may work two (2) days a week remotely.

Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership
- Define and lead data, analytics, and AI strategy aligned to business objectives, growth priorities, and operational outcomes, balancing long‑term vision with practical delivery
- Champion a data‑ and AI‑driven culture by promoting literacy, curiosity, and insight‑informed decision‑making across the enterprise
- Partner with executive leadership and business units to identify high‑value use cases and translate business questions into scalable data, AI, analytics, and automation initiatives
- AI and Analytics Delivery
- Scale enterprise analytics and AI capabilities, including self‑service analytics, machine learning, generative AI, and agentic AI
- Oversee the development of dashboards, reports, predictive models, and AI applications supporting operational and strategic decisions
- Translate data into actionable insights, ensuring timely delivery to the right stakeholders with appropriate validation and monitoring
- Champion of data ethics and responsible AI, with a focus on transparency and trust
- AI Model Quality & Security
- Ensure AI‑ready capabilities and platforms supporting advanced analytics (e.g., graph analytics, NLP, prompt engineering, machine learning)
- Establish and enforce standards, delivery methods, and lifecycle practices across descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analytics
- Govern ethical and responsible AI use, including:
- Model risk management (validation, monitoring, drift detection, retraining)
- GenAI controls (prompt/data leakage, evaluation, guardrails)
- Human‑in‑the‑loop decisioning and auditability for critical use cases
- Ensure compliance with data protection and AI regulations (e.g., GDPR, EU AI Act, CCPA) in partnership with Legal and Compliance
- Technical Leadership
- Build and lead high-performing teams including data engineers, data architects, data scientists, analysts, and data communicators
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning within the data, analytics and AI organization
- Define clear roles, responsibilities, and career-development pathways; partner with HR on recruiting, training, and retention strategies for critical data talent
- Lead enterprise data‑driven innovation, including identifying new data sources and emerging technologies to develop analytics products that enable high‑value use cases, monetize data, and improve profitability
- Cross-Functional Leadership
- Proven ability to influence without authority and build coalitions across IT/OT, security, infrastructure, technical and business leaders such as Engineering, Subsurface, HSE, Regulatory, Finance, to simplify technical concepts, align data and analytics initiatives with business goals, define requirements, and drive cross‑functional adoption
- Experience managing multidisciplinary relationships and driving cultural change towards innovation and continuous improvement
- Collaborative and trusted partner with strong communication skills, connecting field, office, and enterprise stakeholders
- Automation & Efficiency
- Oversee enterprise automation initiatives and implement smart business process with robotic process automation (RPA) to improve operational efficiency. Use the Microsoft Power Platform (Power Apps and Power Automate) to streamline and automate processes across departments.
- Optimize end‑to‑end data‑to‑decision workflows to reduce friction and accelerate time to insight
- Evaluate and implement emerging technologies such as AI agents, vector databases, and automation frameworks
- Value Realization and Performance Measurement
- Define and track key performance indicators for data quality, platform adoption, decision velocity, and business impact
- Measure and report on ROI (Return on Investment) and ROE (Return on Employee) from analytics and AI investments, including revenue growth, cost savings, and efficiency gains
- Lead regular business reviews with stakeholders to assess progress against strategic and value‑delivery goals
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, MIS, IT, Mathematics/Statistics, or another technical field
- Minimum 15 years’ experience across data management, analytics, and BI with minimum 5 years leading teams and complex data/AI initiatives
- Deep data engineering expertise: SQL and modern databases, Python/R, Snowflake/Databricks, ETL, data modeling, integration, governance, and quality
- Strong application & API experience: REST/FastAPI, JSON, web technologies, and service integration
- Advanced analytics & BI: Power BI, analytics frameworks, data visualization, and storytelling
- Microsoft Power Platform & automation: Power Apps, Power Automate, RPA, and workflow optimization
- Cloud & modern data architectures, with awareness of regulatory and compliance requirements
- AI/ML fluency, including generative AI and agentic applications
- Proven, people-centered leader: team building, mentoring, hiring, budget/resource management, and change leadership
Desired/ Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of upstream oil & gas, across onshore and offshore operations
- Hands-on data systems experience: SQL back ends; WellView, ProCount, Kingdom, ARIES, Cygnet, XSPOC, Canary
- Operational data expertise: SCADA, live data streaming, and industrial protocols (e.g., Modbus)
- Solid statistical foundation, including sound interpretation of analytical results (e.g., correlation vs. causation)
