Job Description
Senior Property Accountant Job Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the full-cycle accounting and financial reporting for a portfolio of multifamily and commercial real estate properties.
- Oversees monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, ensuring the timely and accurate preparation of financial statements.
- Reviews and reconciles general ledger accounts, bank accounts, balance sheet accounts, and intercompany transactions.
- Prepares and analyzes monthly financial statements, budget-to-actual variances, occupancy trends, and operating performance for ownership and management.
- Assists in the preparation of annual operating budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections for managed properties.
- Monitors property cash balances and supports cash management activities, including funding requests and owner distributions.
- Records and reconciles tenant billing, rent revenue, security deposits, CAM reconciliations, and other property-related transactions.
- Coordinates with property managers, regional managers, and asset management teams to resolve accounting issues and provide financial guidance.
- Reviews accounts payable and accounts receivable activity to ensure proper coding, accuracy, and compliance with company policies.
- Supports annual financial statement audits, tax return preparation, lender reporting, and owner reporting by preparing schedules and responding to auditor requests.
- Ensures compliance with internal accounting policies, management agreements, loan covenants, and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Identifies and implements process improvements to enhance efficiency, strengthen internal controls, and improve the accuracy of financial reporting.
- Assists with acquisitions, dispositions, and property transitions by preparing opening and closing balance sheets and coordinating accounting activities.
- Mentors and reviews the work of staff accountants, providing technical guidance, training, and support to ensure consistent accounting practices across the portfolio.
- Develops expertise in the company's property management and accounting software (e.g., Yardi or Entrata) to maximize reporting capabilities and operational efficiencies.
Property Accountant Qualifications / Skills:
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Excellent customer service skills
- Proficient in Word, Excel and Outlook
- Dependable and reliable with a strong work ethic
Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:
· Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
- At least 3 years of Accounting experience
- Experience with Yardi software
