Company Description
The Municipality of Anchorage Traffic Engineering Department works to promote safe and efficient area-wide transportation that meets the needs of the community and the Anchorage Municipal Traffic Code requirements. The department:
- Designs, operates, and maintains the Anchorage Traffic Signal System.
- Designs and maintains Anchorage's traffic control devices (signage/markings).
- Provides the necessary transportation data to support core services.
- Provides traffic safety improvements in accordance with identified traffic safety issues.
- Provides traffic review of development plans and building permits.
- Oversees the Municipality’s Vision Zero transportation safety program.
Role Description
This is a full-time, primarily on-site role as the Vision Zero Coordinator located in Anchorage, AK. This staff member:
- Oversees development and implementation of the Municipality’s Vision Zero program, including plans, processes, analyses, reports, recommendations, outreach, partnerships, and funding.
- Reviews traffic safety issues through data analysis, performance monitoring, and site investigations.
- Regularly updates policy makers, municipal departments, and partner agencies on traffic safety performance and program progress.
- Supports and encourages implementation of municipal-wide policy updates, programmatic changes, and specific projects that improve traffic safety.
- Promotes the use of emerging best practices and professional traffic engineering standards (e.g., MUTCD, ITE, NACTO).
- Collaborates with stakeholders to advance Vision Zero and traffic safety goals.
- Reviews investment programs, policies, construction plans, land use proposals, and regional transportation plans for consistency with Vision Zero principles and standards.
- Coordinates meetings, action plans, and joint initiatives among Municipal departments, AMATS, DOT&PF, law enforcement, and other partners.
- Represents the Traffic Engineering Department at Community Council and other public meetings to discuss Vision Zero-related issues.
- Prepares and delivers reports and presentations to communicate progress, findings, and recommendations.
- Performs other duties as assigned, including support of departmental and Traffic Safety programs.

- Bachelor's degree in a related field
Minimum Qualifications (Must Meet ONE of the Following)
- Engineer In Training Certificate or professional engineering registration and five (5) years of experience in traffic engineering or a related engineering field, one (1) year of which must at the level of an Assistant Traffic Engineer I with the Municipality of Anchorage, or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
- Bachelor’s degree in Traffic Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Land Use, or a related discipline, and four (4) years of experience in traffic engineering or a related engineering field, one (1) year of which must at the level of an Assistant Traffic Engineer I with the Municipality of Anchorage, or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
- Master's degree in Traffic Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Land Use, or a related discipline, and two (2) years of experience in traffic engineering or a related engineering field, one (1) year of which must at the level of an Assistant Traffic Engineer I with the Municipality of Anchorage, or the equivalent elsewhere.
