The Opportunity

Multnomah County Library is seeking a creative, customer service-oriented, charismatic Librarian to join our East County Library team!

As an Adult Services Librarian, you will provide excellent patron and informational service to a diverse spectrum of customers of all backgrounds. You will draw on expertise in literature, research and other areas in order to do so.

Due to departmental reorganization, this is a limited recruitment per Personnel Rule 5-55: Classification of Positions Affected by Reorganization. This recruitment is only open to employees who report directly to the Deputy Director of Libraries.

As an Adult Services Librarian, you will respond to information requests that are in person, over the phone, through email, via chat, social media or other virtual media. This includes conducting complex reference interviews and providing readers’ advisory, research services and instruction in person, online and other various formats. You will also provide instruction and assistance to patrons in the use of the library’s equipment, catalogs, databases, public website, internet, and/or computer software applications.

You will also support a safe and welcoming environment by maintaining an awareness of the environment, collaborating, supporting incident response, and actively building relationships with patrons. You will support patron success by helping them understand library rules and sharing community resources as well as answer information questions about library rules, have initial conversations about low level issues, and refer to Person-in-Charge (PIC) as needed. You will be eligible to opt in to serve as PIC at the location.

Additionally, you will support public programming, outreach, and collections efforts by:

  • Supporting library community spaces by planning for special events and tours as well as responding and approving community room requests.
  • Following library policy and procedure to secure speakers/presenters, reserve locations, register participants, create program displays and promote programs/services to the community.
  • Collaborating with the location librarians in following direction from librarian seniors and the systemwide events team, serving as the location lead for developing, coordinating, promoting, delivering and evaluating public programs, presentations and customer experience training, both inside and outside of the library.
  • Working with the Community Engagement team to prepare and provide outreach services in the community at sites that have been selected based on operational criteria and delivering appropriate levels of service.
  • Contributing to the library’s community service and enrichment goals by promoting public awareness of library services and programs for adults.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with patrons, neighborhood organizations and the greater population served by Multnomah County Library, in library and community settings.
  • In collaboration with other librarian(s) and taking direction from systemwide selectors, maintaining the location’s collections of materials for all adults.
  • Exercising professional judgment and knowledge of collection areas, including planning and coordinating collection projects in collaboration with the location administrator and and/or Integrated Services staff.
  • Providing support for processing and shelving materials as well as searching lists for holds.

There will be other duties assigned, but you will be well supported in the execution of those duties.

Your focus will be on your home library, but you will work closely with your fellow branch librarians, to support your designated library region as a whole. You will work closely with your regional staff colleagues and serve as a liaison between the local branch, regional, and systemwide teams.

The library is open and welcoming to all members of our community, including individuals who may be encountering hardships or challenges that affect their behavior and interactions. This position requires someone with the ability to work respectfully and capably with people from all backgrounds and age groups.
