The Equipment Painter is responsible for preparing surfaces, mixing and applying various types of paints, coatings, and finishes to equipment, ensuring high-quality, durable, and aesthetically pleasing results while adhering to safety protocols and environmental regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Surface Preparation:
- Clean and degrease equipment surfaces thoroughly to remove dirt, rust, old paint, and contaminants using methods like sanding, scraping, wire brushing, power washing, abrasive blasting (sandblasting), or chemical treatments.
- Inspect surfaces for imperfections such as dents, scratches, or cracks, and perform necessary repairs (e.g., filling with body fillers, caulk, or putty) to ensure a smooth and even base.
- Apply primers or sealants as needed to promote paint adhesion and provide additional protection.
- Mask off areas not to be painted using tape, paper, or other protective coverings.
- Paint Application:
- Select and mix paints, stains, varnishes, and other coatings according to specifications, ensuring proper color matching, viscosity, and consistency.
- Apply paint using various tools and techniques, including spray guns (HVLP, airless, electrostatic), rollers, and brushes, ensuring even and consistent coverage.
- Apply multiple coats as required, adhering to specified drying and curing times between applications.
- Monitor painting operations to identify and correct flaws like blisters or streaks.
- Perform touch-ups, repainting, or refinishing as needed.
- Equipment Maintenance and Operation:
- Operate and maintain painting equipment, including spray guns, compressors, pumps, mixers, and safety gear, ensuring they are in working order and properly cleaned.
- Disassemble, clean, and reassemble sprayers and other power equipment using appropriate solvents and tools.
- Operate lifting or moving devices such as overhead cranes, jib cranes, forklifts, and manlifts to access areas to be painted or move equipment.
- Quality Control and Safety:
- Inspect finished work for quality, ensuring adherence to specifications, industry standards, and aesthetic requirements.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and regulations (e.g., OSHA), including proper handling and disposal of paints, solvents, and other chemicals.
- Utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) such as respirators, gloves, and protective suits.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Collaboration and Documentation:
- Collaborate with mechanics, supervisors, and other team members to coordinate painting schedules and meet project deadlines.
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to understand project requirements.
- Calculate amounts of required materials and estimate costs.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in various painting techniques (spray painting, brush application, rolling).
- Strong understanding of surface preparation techniques (sanding, blasting, cleaning).
- Knowledge of different types of paints, coatings (e.g., epoxy, polyurethane), solvents, and their applications.
- Competence in using and maintaining painting tools and equipment (spray guns, airless sprayers, sandblasters).
- Ability to mix and match colors accurately.
- Familiarity with quality control measures and standards in painting.
- Basic understanding of paint chemistry.
- Soft Skills:
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous in surface preparation and paint application to ensure a flawless finish.
- Physical Stamina and Dexterity: Ability to stand for prolonged periods, bend, kneel, climb ladders/scaffolding, and lift/move heavy items (often up to 50 lbs). Good hand-eye coordination.
- Time Management: Ability to manage time effectively to meet project deadlines.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and resolve painting challenges or imperfections.
- Communication: Clear communication skills for collaborating with team members and understanding instructions.

- Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent (preferred).
- Proven experience as an equipment painter, industrial painter, or in a similar role.
- Formal training or apprenticeship in industrial painting or coating applications is a plus.
- Certifications (e.g., OSHA 10 card, NACE International Institute, Society for Protective Coatings) are often preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Work typically involves both indoor and outdoor environments.
- May involve working at heights (scaffolding, lifts).
- Exposure to paints, solvents, fumes, and dust, requiring proper ventilation and PPE.
