Assistant Chef – Assisted Living Facility
Job Type: Full-Time (7a-5:30pm, rotating weekends)

Reports To: Administrator/ Head Chef
Position Summary
We are seeking a dependable and hardworking Assistant Chef to support the Head Chef with daily kitchen and food-service operations in our assisted living facility. The Assistant Chef will assist with meal preparation, cooking, plating, food safety, cleaning, and maintaining a high standard of quality for our residents.
The ideal candidate takes pride in preparing attractive, nutritious meals and understands the importance of following resident diet orders, food-safety procedures, and sanitation standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with daily preparation and cooking of breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
- Follow established recipes, preparation instructions, and portion guidelines.
- Follow all resident diet orders, food allergies, texture modifications, and special dietary requirements accurately.
- Prepare meals according to instructions provided by the Head Chef and facility staff.
- Ensure food is cooked properly and meets quality, taste, texture, and presentation standards.
- Maintain proper plate presentation, portion sizes, and overall appearance of meals.
- Ensure meals are served at appropriate temperatures and in a timely manner.
- Complete required food temperature logs accurately and consistently.
- Monitor food temperatures throughout preparation, holding, and service.
- Follow proper food-handling, sanitation, and food-safety procedures at all times.
- Assist with receiving and properly storing food and supplies as directed.
- Properly label, date, rotate, and store food using FIFO procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen throughout the shift.
- Clean and sanitize countertops, cooking equipment, utensils, food-preparation areas, storage areas, and other kitchen surfaces.
- Assist with dishwashing and maintaining clean dishes, cookware, and utensils.
- Complete required cleaning and sanitation logs.
- Help maintain refrigerators, freezers, ovens, stoves, and other kitchen equipment in a clean and sanitary condition.
- Assist the Head Chef with preparing the kitchen for meals and cleaning the kitchen after service.
- Communicate any concerns regarding food quality, resident diet orders, allergies, or kitchen safety to the Head Chef or appropriate staff member.
- Work cooperatively with kitchen and dining-service staff to provide a positive dining experience for residents.
- Follow all facility policies, health department requirements, and food-safety regulations.
- Perform other kitchen and dining-service duties as assigned by the Head Chef.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in a commercial kitchen, restaurant, assisted living, healthcare, or senior living environment preferred.
- Previous cooking or food-preparation experience preferred.
- Knowledge of basic food-safety and sanitation practices.
- Ability to follow recipes, instructions, diet orders, and food-safety procedures accurately.
- Strong attention to detail, especially regarding food temperatures, cleanliness, and plate presentation.
- Dependable, punctual, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and safely lift and move food, supplies, and kitchen equipment as required.
- Food Handler or ServSafe certification preferred or required according to applicable regulations.
