Summary
The Meter Reader is responsible for accurately reading and recording utility meter data for residential, commercial and irrigation water. This position involves routine fieldwork, customer interaction, and strict attention to accuracy and safety procedures.
Responsibilities:
- Meter Readings: Accurately read and record utility meter readings on assigned routes
- Time Management: Ensure timely and complete submission of meter data
- Troubleshooting: Identify and report abnormal readings, leaks, damaged meters, or possible tampering
- Safety: Follow all safety policies and procedures while performing fieldwork
Examples of Work:
- Use handheld devices or manual logs to collect meter readings
- Verify meter locations and customer account information
- Maintain accurate daily work records
- Communicate courteously with customers and respond to basic inquiries
- Follow established routes and schedules efficiently
- Operate and care for assigned equipment
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Perform related duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Proven experience in field service or utility operations is preferred.
- Strong mechanical knowledge with the ability to troubleshoot basic issues.
- Familiarity with hand tools and power tools used in utility work.
- Basic electrical knowledge is a plus but not required.
- Experience with bucket trucks or utility locating equipment is beneficial
- Excellent time management skills
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to Lift 15 lbs. and stand on your feet for long hours.
- Ability to walk long distances and work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to bend, kneel, lift meter covers, and perform repetitive tasks.
Licenses/Education:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Valid New Jersey Driver’s License in Good Standing
- Prior utility, fieldwork, or municipal experience preferred
