Job Description
The 2026 Election will be a critical moment for the Montana labor movement and for working people across the state. As such, the Montana AFL-CIO will be engaged in specific labor-related issue canvasses that promote and educate the public about pro-worker economic policies that benefit union members and non-union members alike. We are also focused on electing pro-worker candidates up and down the ballot to ensure working people have a seat at the decision-making table. We are looking to bring on motivated staff to knock on doors in Butte, Deer Lodge, Anaconda and the surrounding area to ensure that pro-worker issues are at the front of voters’ minds and to elect pro-worker candidates.
The Montana AFL-CIO is also looking for a Paid Canvasser Lead to manage basic day-to-day operations on the ground for our regional canvassing teams. We are seeking a well-organized and reliable individual to take on a few more responsibilities. This includes working directly with the Field Director to ensure our staging locations are open and closed properly, manage canvassers’ timesheets, that we have enough canvassing materials, and to check in with paid canvassers to make sure our canvassing turfs are being completed.
Responsibilities
- Door-to-Door Canvassing - Knocking on voters’ doors and either having guided conversations with them about MT AFL-CIO’s endorsed candidates or having an issues-based conversation on the benefits of pro-worker economic policies.
- Data Collection - Collection of data from conversations with voters on the doors.
- Managing Day-to-Day Operations - Opening and closing staging location, checking in with other canvassers to ensure turfs are complete, managing timesheets, and communicating with the Field Director on supplies, staging location needs, and staff updates.
Qualifications
- A strong commitment to the MT AFL-CIO’s mission and goals.
- Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills while also being a self-motivator.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
- Owner of, or access to, reliable transportation and a smartphone or tablet that can be used while canvassing.
- Ability to work 20 to 35 hours per week on weekends and some nights. We have scheduling flexibility on a limited basis.
- Previous experience in overseeing staff preferred, but not required.
Compensation Job Details
- $27 per hour with a maximum of 35 hours per week
- Travel within the Butte-Deer Lodge-Anaconda area. This position also includes potential travel to Belgrade on a limited basis.
- Canvassers will work outside at least 80% of their workday and be on their feet walking for at least 80% of each work shift.
- This job is available through June 2, 2026 with an opportunity for extension through November 4, 2026.
