Position Overview

The Student Support Director leads the school’s comprehensive student support systems to ensure that every child has access to the services and resources needed to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

This role oversees the Exceptional Children (EC) program, Section 504 plans, and behavioral and social-emotional supports. Working closely with educators and families, the Student Support Director helps ensure that student services are responsive, inclusive, and aligned with the school’s Montessori approach.

Within the school’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), this role partners with the instructional team while providing leadership for Tier 3 supports, complex student needs, and transitions into formal EC services when appropriate.

This position is deeply centered on supporting students, partnering with families, and helping staff navigate complex needs with care and clarity.

Reports to: Board of Directors

Supervises: Student Support Team (EC staff, interventionists, counselors, behavioral/SEL staff)

Key Responsibilities

Student Support Leadership

  • Lead and support a coordinated system of services for students with diverse needs
  • Supervise and support student support staff
  • Foster collaboration between educators and student support team members

Exceptional Children (EC) & 504 Services

  • Oversee the implementation of EC services and IEPs
  • Support evaluation, eligibility, and service delivery processes
  • Ensure effective implementation of Section 504 plans and accommodations

MTSS & Tier 3 Support

  • Partner with the Teaching & Learning Coordinator and Education Director within the MTSS framework
  • Provide leadership for Tier 3 intervention planning and support
  • Participate in data review and problem-solving for students with more intensive needs
  • Support transitions from MTSS into EC evaluation and services when appropriate

Behavioral & Social-Emotional Support

  • Lead the school’s behavioral and social-emotional support systems
  • Support Tier 2 and Tier 3 behavioral interventions
  • Collaborate with staff to implement proactive and restorative approaches

Compliance & Program Oversight

  • Ensure alignment with federal and state requirements (IDEA, Section 504, and related guidelines)
  • Support clear and consistent processes for documentation and service delivery

Assessment & Accommodations

  • Ensure appropriate testing accommodations for students with IEPs and 504 plans
  • Partner with the Testing Coordinator to support implementation

Staff Support & Development

  • Supervise, evaluate, and support student support staff
  • Support professional growth and collaborative problem-solving
  • Participate in hiring and onboarding of student support team members

Family & Community Engagement

  • Serve as a key partner for families navigating student support services
  • Support communication between families and school teams
  • Build connections with community partners and resources

Culture & Collaborative Leadership

  • Contribute to the school’s participatory leadership model
  • Promote a culture of inclusion, collaboration, and student-centered decision-making
Qualifications

Required

  • Master’s degree in special education, school psychology, counseling, social work, or a related field
  • North Carolina EC licensure (or ability to obtain)
  • Experience supporting students with diverse learning or behavioral needs
  • Knowledge of special education and 504 processes
  • Experience working collaboratively with educators and families
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills

Preferred

  • Experience in a school leadership or coordination role
  • Experience in a public or Montessori school setting
  • Familiarity with MTSS frameworks

Mountain City Public Montessori is currently implementing an updated leadership structure designed to better support the complexity of a growing public Montessori school. Rather than concentrating many responsibilities in a single role, we are distributing leadership across several specialized positions focused on instructional leadership, Montessori practice, and student support systems.

This intentional shift strengthens clarity, sustainability, and collaboration within our participatory leadership model. Compensation

To be determined based on qualifications. Base salary will be in alignment with our teacher salary schedule.
