Position Summary

(Seasonal Salaried, Benefited position) The Assistant Ski Patrol Director supports the Director in the leadership, management, and daily operations of the ski patrol department. This role helps ensure the safety of guests and staff through hands-on emergency response, training support, and operational coverage. The Assistant Director works closely with the Director to develop patrol staff, maintain compliance, and keep daily mountain operations running smoothly, stepping into the Director's responsibilities as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support departmental budgeting, equipment tracking/maintenance, and day-to-day records and reporting
  • Assist with staffing functions, including scheduling, onboarding, and day-to-day supervision of patrol staff
  • Help promote a culture of safety, accountability, and guest service through coaching and on-hill feedback
  • Lead on-mountain emergency medical response, rescue operations, and lift evacuations in the field, ensuring timely and effective response
  • Maintain high standards of patient care and documentation, coordinating with external emergency services as needed
  • Assist with hazard identification and mitigation, incident reporting, and accident investigations
  • Help ensure day-to-day compliance with applicable regulations, policies, and industry standards
  • Assist in developing and delivering training programs, certifications, and drills to maintain staff competency
  • Serve as a lead instructor or trainer for specific certifications or skill areas as assigned
  • Partner with Lift Operations, Mountain Operations, and other departments on daily planning and terrain management
  • Act on behalf of the Director in their absence

Qualifications

  • Current Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) certification or higher (EMT preferred)
  • Solid ski patrol experience, including some supervisory or lead experience
  • Strong knowledge of mountain safety practices, aerial and ground based lift evacuations, explosives handling, avalanche mediation, rescue techniques, and risk management (Pro 1 avy training preferred)
  • Strong communication, coaching, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to ski at an expert level in all terrain and conditions

Preferred

  • Avalanche certification (e.g., Pro 1 or higher preferred) or willingness to achieve certification within a year after hire
  • Experience supervising staff in a resort setting
  • OEC Instructor certification, coordinate with National Ski Patrol 
  • Advanced competency in technical rescue scenarios, including high/low angle systems, specialized extrication, and ascent techniques
  • Competency with various digital platforms, including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and iOS systems

Work Environment

  • Majority of time spent outdoors in alpine conditions, including extreme weather
  • Physically demanding role requiring skiing/riding, lifting, and emergency response activities
  • Variable schedule including weekends, holidays, and extended hours during peak operations
  • Frequent exposure to high-risk situations requiring quick decision-making
  • Some time spent in indoor office environment for any administrative responsibilities
  • Competency with various digital platforms, including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and iOS systems
