Operations Engineer – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
On-site/Field | $125K-$150K Equity
Motive Workforce is partnering with an innovative energy technology company to hire an experienced Operations Engineer who will own the deployment, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of advanced battery energy storage systems in the field.
This is a hands-on role for someone who thrives on solving complex technical problems on-site. You'll work directly with customers while partnering with engineering teams to drive system performance and reliability. If you're comfortable working independently, troubleshooting power systems, and supporting critical energy infrastructure, we want to talk to you.
What You'll Do
- Coordinate fleet deployment, scheduling, dispatch, and retrieval of mobile energy systems
- Lead commissioning, startup, and operational testing of battery energy storage systems
- Verify electrical connections, grounding, and site readiness ahead of system startup
- Execute preventive and corrective maintenance to maximize fleet uptime
- Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, battery, and power electronics issues in the field
- Act as the primary technical escalation point for customer support and field operations
- Operate and validate system controls, operating modes, and state transitions
- Maintain detailed service documentation, maintenance records, and performance data
- Communicate technical findings and status updates to customers and internal engineering teams
- Participate in an on-call support rotation
- Travel to customer sites throughout the region as needed (up to 50%)
What You Bring
- Experience supporting battery energy storage systems (BESS), microgrids, UPS, or similar power systems
- Hands-on background in commissioning, startup, field service, or operations
- Strong troubleshooting skills across power electronics and electrical systems
- Experience working safely on 480V or higher electrical equipment
- Ability to read electrical drawings and perform quality electrical terminations
- Experience with SCADA, controls software, or energy management platforms
- Strong customer communication skills and the ability to work independently
- Solid knowledge of electrical safety standards and field service best practices
Nice to Have
- Experience with inverters, DC power systems, portable power, or microgrid technologies
- Familiarity with Modbus or other industrial communication protocols
- Experience with fleet management or remote monitoring platforms
- Basic programming experience in Python, MATLAB, Julia, or similar tools
- Background in fast-paced startup or emerging technology environments
- Certifications related to battery systems, electrical safety, or heavy equipment operation
