Job Description
Provide a safe aquatic experience through rule enforcement, accident prevention, and competency in lifesaving skills. This position is a seasonal, part-time, and non-exempt position.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 15 years of age with a workers permit.
- Must be able to pass the Lifeguard Skills Test.
The test includes:
- Be able to swim 200 yards using either or either the front crawl (freestyle) and/or breaststroke without resting.
- Be able to conduct a feet-first surface dive, retrieve a 10-lb. brick, and bring it to the surface.
- Be able to tread water without using your arms for 2 minutes.

This position requires an Ellis Lifeguard license, which includes CPR, First Aid, and AED training.
Immediate Supervisor:
The Lifeguard directly reports to the Recreation Supervisor and pool Manager.
Essential Functions:
- Arrive and punch in 15 minutes before the start of the shift to set up pools, including but not limited to; setting out rescue equipment, putting up umbrellas, ensuring bathrooms and locker rooms are clean and open, installing lane lines, and bringing out swim lesson equipment.
- Must wear staff shirt, visor, swimsuit, and whistle while on duty.
- Guard your zone with 10/20 scanning and enforce rules responsibly, NEVER leaving your assigned post until you are appropriately relieved, or the area is closed and clear of patrons. Posts are on rotations; you will receive a break at least every 2 hours.
- Always provide exceptional customer service to patrons and guests.
- Return to the rotation on time and efficiently after the break.
- Perform assigned closing duties, including but not limited to, putting equipment away, cleaning the bathrooms and locker rooms, and closing umbrellas.
- Co-teach swimming lessons (training provided).
- Complete accident and rescue reports thoroughly.
- Attending 2-hour weekly mandatory in-service.
- Resolve problems with patrons before they get more serious.
- Perform the job safely and in compliance with the district policies, procedures, work and safety rules, and the employee handbook.
Support the District’s safety initiative, including adhering to policies and procedures, safely performing your job, attending required training, seeking additional training as needed, promptly reporting accidents/incidents, and proactively addressing hazards in the workplace
Psychological Considerations:
Lifeguards may need to resolve differences and problems that arise with patrons. The Lifeguard, Pool Manager/Assistant Manager, and Head Guard are responsible for a safe and well-organized operation. May also have to work under stressful conditions when rescue attempts are made.
Physiological Considerations:
Must have the ability to lift 45 lbs. May need to respond quickly to an emergency.
Environmental Considerations:
All activities are performed outside. These conditions include possible high temperatures, humidity, and exposure to sunlight for extended periods.
Cognitive Considerations:
Must possess good safety awareness and judgment. Must be friendly and like to work with people of all ages.
