What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard position at BENSENVILLE PARK DISTRICT?
Responsible for diligently watching the pool zone of protection and responding competently to emergencies. Lifeguards report to Pool Managers and Aquatic Supervisor.
DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- When on duty, adhering to the Lifeguard protocols in regards to continual scanning, lifeguard skills, and responding to emergencies.
- Provide CPR/AED, Spinal Injury Management, First Aid, and in-water rescues.
- Ability to enforce all Water Park safety rules firmly yet courteously and diplomatically.
- Ensure the safety of Water Park patrons by enforcing the established pool rules and responding to emergencies as they arise.
- Expresses good judgment involving rules and disciplining patrons must be based solely on established Water Park rules and not on emotion. Any punishment assigned should fit the severity of the violation.
- Enforce rules on the pool deck and throughout the facility, in and outside of the Water Park.
- Pick up trash while on the lookout for undesirable individuals, drinking, fighting, and other rule enforcement.
- Participate in random Lifeguard audits.
- Attend all in-services and job-specific training regularly.
- Perform any other duties as required or assigned.

The Bensenville Park District is an American Red Cross–authorized facility. Candidates must hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification or be able to obtain certification through the Park District as a condition of employment. Certifications from other American Red Cross–authorized providers are accepted.

Prerequisite skills required to obtain American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification include: the ability to swim 150 yards continuously using front crawl and/or breaststroke, tread water for two minutes without the use of hands, and immediately complete an additional 50-yard swim; as well as retrieve a 10-lb. brick from the bottom of the 12-foot diving well using a surface dive and return to the surface within 1 minute and 40 seconds.

Must be CPR/First Aid/AED certified or able to become certified prior to season start.
