Position Summary:
The Machine Control Specialist supports grading, paving, excavation, and utility crews by managing, maintaining, and optimizing GPS and laser-based machine control systems. This position ensures that digital project models, base stations, and field data are accurate and up to date, helping crews achieve precise grades and efficient production.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set up, calibrate, and maintain GPS and laser control systems on equipment such as dozers, graders, and excavators.
- Build, upload, and verify 3D models for use in machine control and grade management systems.
- Troubleshoot and resolve GPS, radio, and sensor issues in the field or shop.
- Coordinate with surveyors, engineers, and project managers to ensure models match project design data.
- Manage data transfers between office and field systems (including file conversions, uploads, and backups).
- Perform field checks to verify grade accuracy and as-built conditions.
- Maintain an organized inventory of control equipment, base stations, and rover units.
- Train operators and field personnel on proper use and care of GPS and laser systems.
- Ensure all machine control systems are updated with the latest firmware and project files.
- Assist with site setup, control point verification, and quality checks throughout each phase of construction.
Qualifications:
Required:
- 2 years of experience in GPS/machine control, construction surveying, or related field.
- Strong understanding of heavy civil construction operations (grading, paving, excavation, utilities).
- Working knowledge of Trimble, Topcon, or Leica GPS systems.
- Ability to read and interpret civil plans and digital models.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Basic computer and data management skills (file transfers, coordinate systems, etc.).
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel between job sites.
Preferred:
- Experience with model building software (Trimble Business Center, Civil 3D, AGTEK, etc.).
- Familiarity with drones or site surveying workflows.
- Previous experience training operators or field staff.
- Bilingual
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and terrain conditions.
- Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. of equipment.
- Frequent walking, bending, and standing on active construction sites.
