RESPONSIBILITIES: The Assistant Director, Student Housing assists the Director of Housing and Residence Education with the overall administration of the residential program through functional assignments in housing operations and residence education. Functional assignments could change annually to best meet the needs of the Office of Student Housing and the professional development needs of the incumbent.
Housing Assignments & Occupancy Management
Oversee housing assignments, contracts, room changes, check-in/check-out processes, and occupancy management across all residential communities. Develops and manages housing application and assignment processes for the academic year, summer, and break housing. Coordinate damage assessments, move-out billing, and final charge processing with residence life and facilities partners. Provides responsive support to student inquiries and concerns regarding housing applications, assignments, billing, and processes. Manages housing waiver requests in alignment with the University’s Residency Policy.
System Administration & Data Management
Serves as the primary administrator for Adirondack (The Housing Director) and leads related projects including upgrades, module implementation, and system optimization. Ensure accurate data management and integration across key university systems (e.g., Colleague, Genetec, Advocate, payment platforms). Acts as the liaison with campus IT, third-party vendors, and other departments to support effective system use and data exchange. Provides training and technical support to staff and end users; maintains clear documentation of procedures and processes. Develops and maintains regular reports and dashboards for housing occupancy, retention, trends, and strategic planning. Supports audit and compliance efforts by partnering with Residential Education on room condition and key control processes.
Operations & Process Coordination
Partners with the Assistant Director for Residential Education and facilities teams to address year-round housing facility concerns. Coordinates the opening and closing of residence halls each semester in collaboration with Housing Operations and Residence Life staff. Maintains accurate and timely records of housing assignments, occupancy, and billing in all relevant systems. Collaborates on the creation of student communications, marketing materials, and housing-related website content.
Campus Collaboration & Departmental Engagement
Works closely with partners in Facilities, IT, Billing & Administrative Services, Residence Life, and other campus departments to ensure seamless housing operations. Participate in departmental and university committees focused on data management, technology, retention, and strategic initiatives. Serves in the professional on-call duty rotation, responding to after-hours emergencies and supporting student crisis response as needed. Contributes to ongoing training and professional development for Housing & Residential Education staff.

REQUIREMENTS: Master’s degree in student affairs, communications, or related field. Three to five years of progressive responsibility and successful experience in student housing or a related field. Demonstrate a clear understanding of student development theories and have the ability to apply the theories in practical situations. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrate a strong client service orientation. Demonstrate computer proficiency with standard office applications.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience and usage with Adirondack Housing Solutions software. Experience with Advocate conduct software.

The Assistant Director reports to the Director of Housing and Residential Education, and may supervise Area Coordinators or administrative professionals as needed.
The Assistant Director works closely with other Assistant Director colleagues within the department, Dean of Students, and the Vice President for Student Affairs.

Working Conditions
Regular office hours (as outlined by the University) in a high traffic environment with frequent evening and weekend work. This is a 12-month position. This person must work with a high volume of students, parents, University administrators, faculty, and staff. Live-on possibilities exist for this position but are not required.
