Job Summary:
Secondary School Counselor: Provide individual and group counseling to students to address personal, social, academic, and emotional concerns. Assist students in developing coping strategies and problem-solving skills, meeting graduation requirements through appropriate academic placement and goal setting.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
None.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Academic Support: Collaborate with students, parents, and teachers to assess and address academic needs. Assist students in setting educational goals, developing study skills, and exploring career pathways. Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to address students\' social, emotional, and behavioral concerns. Participate as a team member on multidisciplinary teams such as MTSS, 504, and IEP, to collaboratively develop intervention strategies, accommodations, and support plans.
- College and Career Development: Provide guidance and support in career exploration and planning. Assist students in understanding career options, making informed decisions, and developing post-secondary education plans. Ensure all students fulfill the required ICAP requirements.
- Crisis Intervention: Offer immediate support and counseling to students during crisis situations, such as trauma, grief, or other emergencies. Collaborate with other school personnel and community resources to ensure appropriate assistance is provided.
- Individual Student Planning: Assist students in developing academic and personal success plans, including course selection, college preparation, and post-graduation planning.
- Group Facilitation: Conduct group counseling sessions or workshops on topics such as self-esteem, conflict resolution, bullying prevention, study skills, and stress management when needed.
- Data Management and Reporting: Maintain accurate and confidential student records, including counseling notes, progress reports, and outcome measures. Generate reports on student counseling services and interventions as required.
- Professional Development: Engage in ongoing professional development activities to stay updated with counseling techniques, educational trends, and legal and ethical guidelines.
- Events: Attend and assist with events, as appropriate. Some events may be scheduled in the evenings or weekends. These events included but are not limited to, secondary parent information sessions, secondary award ceremonies, etc.
Required Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of counseling theories, techniques, and ethical standards.
- Understanding of child and adolescent development, mental health issues, and learning styles.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse students, families, and staff members.
- Knowledge of educational systems, college admissions, and career exploration resources.
- Proficient in using technology for data management and counseling purposes.
Education & Experience:
- A master\'s degree in professional school counseling from an accredited school counseling program
- Appropriate state licensure, certification, or credentials as required by the state educational jurisdiction.
