About the Position
The Safety Specialist is responsible for helping to maintain an orderly and safe environment for students, families, staff, and visitors inside and outside the building. This includes monitoring the people and items that enter and leave the building, providing staff and students escorts to and from vehicles or public transportation when requested, being keenly aware of (and reporting) any unusual occurrences in the neighborhood, and securing the building at the end of each evening. This person will also help support facilities work such as handling deliveries of supplies and other materials, setting up rooms for events, assembling school equipment, and assisting the Facilities Engineer with facilities projects (as needed).
This is a full or part time role and successful candidates must be available to work shifts that fall between the hours of Sunday 6:00 PM to 12:00 AM Monday-Thursday 8:00 AM to 12:00 AM. Additional hours and occasional overtime may be required as needed.
Safety/Security Specialist reports to the Manager of Safety and Security.
Responsibilities:
OVERVIEW
- Patrol school building and grounds to prevent loitering and to ensure compliance with school regulations and local laws
- Conduct and observe searches of all personal property entering the building, including student's book bags, backpacks, suitcases and lunch boxes
- Uphold the school’s visitor policy and ensure that all visitors to the school are logged and cleared to be in the space
- Check parking areas and entrances to schools
- Perform routine building safety checks and record results in a log
- Support all front-desk operations; including answering phones, visitor check-ins, etc
- Checking for graffiti or other items that could promote any unsafe behavior
- Staying up to date on current drugs, gang activity, etc in DC and communicating this with staff
- Coordinating with the police and school resource officers to have proactive measures in our school with kids and a positive working relationship when we do have a crisis. Monitoring the neighborhood police alerts to ensure we are up to date on any local concerns and incidents
- Supporting attendance checks/check-in/check out with students in coordination with the front desk/operations
- Supporting students leaving the school for the bus, in coordination with the behavior support team
- Pro-actively alerting behavior support and crisis management team when a student is out of space and escalating, and assisting in keeping students and staff away from an unsafe situation
- Ensuring all emergency protocols (weather, natural disaster, fire, active shooter, shelter in place) are clear to everyone and practiced regularly
- Communication to leadership and staff regarding any safety concerns during the course of school and over the weekends
- Regularly monitoring and reviewing the security cameras
- Other duties that support operations and culture in maintaining a safe and secure environment
- Prepare a formal Incident Report for submission to the Director of Operations when required, or directed
- Open and/or lock up all building doors, parking area, and outside spaces every morning and/or evening
- Carry, lift, and deliver supplies, tools, and equipment as needed
- Operate security equipment as required, including two-way radios, security cameras, etc.
- Help set-up school spaces for daily school activities and special events, including moving furniture between buildings/offices/classrooms
- Assist with summer facilities projects such as painting, moving work, assembly of school equipment, etc.
- Oversee all facility related deliveries, ensuring they are received, signed for, and stored accordingly
Salary : $20 - $24
