KUSM-TV is a public broadcasting station owned and operated by Montana State University-Bozeman. Together with KUFM-TV, located at the University of Montana in Missoula, these two stations comprise of Montana PBS, a television network which provides programming and related services for the interest, convenience and necessity of a statewide audience.

General Statement
KUSM-TV is a public broadcasting station owned and operated by Montana State University-Bozeman. Together with KUFM-TV, located at the University of Montana in Missoula, these two stations comprise of Montana PBS, a television network which provides programming and related services for the interest, convenience and necessity of a statewide audience.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for the operation and maintenance of all technical equipment used in television broadcasting for the MonatanaPBS Network ensuring uninterrupted services to the entire State of Montana.
- Plan, coordinate, and implement the technical requirements of MontanaPBS Television studio and field productions.
- Responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of radio frequency transmitters of all types in strict accordance with Federal Communications Commission regulations, Montana PBS standard operating procedures, and sound broadcast engineering practices.
- Provide technical support in classrooms, laboratories, and production facilities to Montana State University Faculty and Staff.
- Participate in the technical planning and implementation of new technologies at MontanaPBS.
- Two years of post-secondary technical training specializing in broadcast engineering, information technology, electronic communications, or closely related field plus three years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) experience in one of the above fields or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
- Demonstrated in depth experience with digital television production, television studio maintenance, as well as computer networking and software skills.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of LAN and WAN networking best practices.
- Demonstrated competence with general and specialized computer word processing, spread sheets, data bases and drawing programs.
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose and repair broadcast related equipment to component level Demonstrated competence using general test equipment including multi-meters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, etc.
- Relevant knowledge of digital television systems theory Knowledge of HD SD-SDI quality control for video & audio level and timing.
- Certification by the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE).
- Relevant knowledge of safe procedures required to repair, tune and operate High Voltage High Power transmitters and other RF systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of remote control systems.
- Relevant knowledge of 3 phase AC power distribution, wiring requirements, and proper grounding procedures.
- Knowledge of FCC broadcast requirements.
- Basic fabrication and soldering skills.
- Have strong organizational skills and be detail oriented.
- Ability to work effectively, consistently exercising initiative and good judgment under minimal supervision.
- Have the ability to successfully engage other staff, stakeholders, and the general public in a congenial and helpful manner.
- Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points).
- Work schedules vary greatly and are not necessarily 8am-5pm. The center operates evenings, nights, and weekends. Shifts may be altered to meet the best needs of the center, with a rotating call schedule. Remote broadcasting’s may cause time away from home for several days.
Physical Demands
- This position requires the ability to: transport up to 50 pounds, position self to stoop, bend, and crawl; ascend and descend ladders and stairs, and traverse long distances to remote sites, ability to operate snowmobiles, 4WD trucks and tow a trailer safely; ability to travel to and from remote sites safely under all weather conditions at all times of day; work under stressful circumstances in all weather conditions.
