Job Summary
The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) will be responsible for performing sexual assault exams on adult and adolescent patients presenting to the Emergency Department within 96 hours of an assault. They will focus on obtaining an in-depth patient history and medical forensic exam, collecting evidence, following the chain of custody, supporting the patient using trauma related care, and serving as expert consults in the field of forensic nursing.
Responsibilities
Core Duties
· Making sure medical clearance is obtained before starting medical forensic exam & WV Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kit.
· Obtain consent for WV Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kit.
· Educate patient on patient advocate and arrange for advocate to be present throughout the exam if patient so wishes.
· Collect detailed history, photos and medical forensic exam from patient.
· Collect evidence utilizing proper chain of custody.
· Utilize trauma informed care throughout examination.
· Complete all documentation required.
Job-Specific
· West Virginia Adult/ Adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Certificate (Required)
o 40 hours online didactic
o 2-day 17hr in-person skills days
o 20-hour SAMFE virtual practicum
o 3 SANE related additional opportunities
o 3 complete medical forensic exams
o 15 speculum insertions
· Two (2) years in direct care nursing (Preferred)
· Proven expertise in patient care, documentation, physical assessment, and attention to detail.
· Must be able to lift up to 10lbs.
· All positions are on-call only.
· After receiving a call for an exam, arrival goal of less then and no longer then two (2) hour response time.
· Must be available for at minimum 32 hours of call per schedule.
· Schedule is based on 7 days a week 365 days per year.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Education
• Associate's Degree (Required) BSN Preferred.

- WV Adult and Adolescent SANE Certification (Required)
