The Mohave County Public Works-Parks Division is seeking to hire an Assistant Park Superintendent.

Location: 6250 Hualapai Mountain Road, Kingman, AZ.

Salary Range:
Park Ranger
Range 15 Steps 1-8$23.26 - $28.61/hr.
Assistant Park Superintendent
 Range 16 Steps 1-8$24.42 - $30.02/hr.

 Hours for work may vary: 
            • Scheduled hours could vary depending on department seasonal event needs.
            • Schedule does involve being "On-Call" which would include weekends and holidays.

This position may also support operations at Davis Camp Park and assist with special events at the Mohave County Fairgrounds as needed.

• Travel and Work Environment: This role involves travel throughout Mohave County and may require operating a vehicle in varying traffic, terrain, and weather conditions, from elevations of 541 feet up to approximately 8,500 feet.

• Required Certifications and Screening: AZ POST certification is required. Applicants with a lapsed or out-of-state certification must obtain active AZ POST certification within the first six months of employment. Must successfully complete post-offer screenings, including a drug test, psychological evaluation, polygraph, medical exam, and physical agility assessment appropriate for law enforcement personnel.

  • Supervises, coordinates and performs a variety of administrative staff work such as maintaining records; responding to requests; planning and researching activities; preparing correspondence, reports, and statistics; purchases needed supplies; authorizes overtime and establishes project priorities.
  • Provides necessary training and leads park staff in performance of their duties.
  • Resolves conflicts with staff and the public.
  • Performs law enforcement functions within the assigned park areas.
  • Patrols park and collects fees.
  • Communicates and acts in a professional manner with the public, co-workers, and work contacts.
  • Completes performance evaluations, supervises and assists with activities of assigned parks personnel.
  • Monitors records for accuracy and adherence to policy and/or procedures/techniques.
  • Resolves operational problems to increase efficiency and quality of work.
  • Delivers presentations and discussions to the public and/or other agencies on programs and responds to questions or comments from the general public.
  • Assists in performing various skilled and unskilled park maintenance activities to include, but not limited to: trash, restroom, cabin and recreational area clean-up; lawn maintenance; tree trimming; electrical wiring; plumbing and construction.
  • Operates a variety of mechanical equipment and hand tools during the performance of maintenance activities.
  • Assists other agencies as assigned in the performance of work assignment.
  • Administers first aid when necessary.
Physical & Environmental Conditions
Applicants should be prepared for:
  • Outdoor work involving moderate to strenuous physical activity in conditions that may include intense heat, cold, high winds, and desert environments.
  • Occasional exposure to smoke and heat during fire-related duties.
  • Exposure to exhaust, chemical fumes, oils, grease, hazardous materials, and noise from equipment.
  • Regularly lifting 25 lbs to 150 lbs or more.
  • A balance of standing, walking, and sitting throughout the workday.
  • Physical tasks such as climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, ladder use, and navigating confined spaces.

Special Job Requirements 
  • Must pass drug screen post offer.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license for operation of motor vehicles on Arizona roads at the start of employment and maintain said license while employed in this position.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B within one year of employment.
  • Must obtain a pesticide applicator's license through the Arizona Structural Pest Commission within one year of employment.
  • Provide acceptable driving history at no cost to the County.
  • On-site residency may be required with housing provided.

  • High School Diploma/GED (General Education Degree).
  • Two (2) years' experience in park operations, Park Ranger, law enforcement, and/or related field.
  • Requires certification as a law enforcement officer by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Certification (AZPOST) Board.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications.

 Preferred Qualifications
  • College level course work in Park Recreation, Park Administration, Park Management and/or related fields. 
  • Principles of supervision, training and evaluation.
  • Basic computer usage, affiliated software and operation of office equipment (i.e. fax machine, copier, phone, etc.)
  • Principles, practices, methods, techniques, and equipment used in park operations, maintenance and security.
  • Relevant laws, rules and regulations pertaining to law enforcement in general and specifically to the park operations.
  • Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to parks operation and general maintenance work.
  • Construction and building practices and landscape maintenance.
  • First aid methods and procedures.
  • Plan, organize, utilize, and manage manpower and equipment within prescribed budgetary requirements and established standards.
  • Set priorities, assign, schedule, train, supervise and evaluate work activities and to persuade assigned personnel effectively.
  • Maintain safe and efficient parks operations.
  • Plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates.
  • Speak effectively before community groups and other civic organizations.
  • Comprehend, retain and recall factual information.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Protect the public and enforce the laws within the assigned park with due regard for the rights and safety of individuals, the preservation of property, and the maintenance of good community and interpersonal relationships in compliance with established laws, policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Demonstrate moral character, honesty, tact, fairness, lack of prejudice and desire to help when dealing with people.
  • Safely operate a motor vehicle and retain control under emergency conditions, adverse traffic or weather conditions, terrain and/or high speed driving.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associate personnel, other agencies and the public.
  • Demonstrate proficiency and maintain safe operation of firearms and law enforcement equipment.
  • Prepare accurate and legible reports; and present detailed, objective oral statements.
  • Meet the eligibility requirements to obtain and maintain Arizona Peace Officer Standard and Training (AZPOST) certification.
  • Fulfill all physical requirements of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Salary : $50,794 - $62,442
