About the Role
Modisoft Payment Services is seeking a Credit Risk Underwriter to assess and manage risk for new and existing merchant accounts. In this role, you will evaluate merchant applications, analyze financial data, detect potential fraud, and make underwriting decisions that balance growth with risk protection.
You’ll work closely with Sales, Compliance, and Operations teams to ensure timely onboarding, accurate risk evaluation, and strong portfolio performance. The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, excellent attention to detail, and experience in payments, merchant services, or related financial environments.
What You’ll Do
- Review merchant applications, supporting documents, financial statements, bank records, and credit reports.
- Evaluate risk exposure and determine approval, decline, or conditional terms using defined underwriting guidelines.
- Identify potential fraud indicators and conduct enhanced due diligence as needed.
- Communicate underwriting decisions and requirements clearly to internal teams.
- Monitor merchant activity to identify emerging risk trends within the portfolio.
- Collaborate with Sales and Payment Operations to ensure accurate and compliant onboarding.
- Maintain thorough documentation for all underwriting decisions and follow compliance standards.
- Recommend improvements to underwriting processes, risk policies, and evaluation criteria.
Qualifications
Required
- 1–3 years of experience in credit underwriting, merchant underwriting, risk analysis, or a related financial services role.
- Strong ability to read and interpret financial documents, credit bureau reports, and bank statements.
- High attention to detail and strong analytical judgment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple applications in a fast‑paced environment.
- Familiarity with fraud indicators and risk mitigation strategies.
Preferred
- Experience in merchant services, payment processing, fintech, or POS environments.
- Familiarity with underwriting and risk tools (e.g., Experian, Equifax, LexisNexis, Socure).
- Knowledge of high‑risk MCC categories and compliance considerations.
- Understanding of chargeback risk, card‑present vs. card‑not‑present environments, and transaction monitoring.
