Job description:

About Modern Media

Since 2004, Modern Media Communications has been a leading technology services integrator serving Central Florida. We specialize in structured cabling, public safety DAS, security systems, access control, and audio/video solutions — delivering high-quality installations for federal, state, and commercial clients. We are seeking an experienced Lead Structured Cabling Installer to join our growing team.

Position Summary

The Lead Structured Cabling Installer is responsible for overseeing and executing the installation of copper and fiber optic cabling infrastructure on commercial and government projects throughout Brevard County and the greater Orlando area. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring deep technical expertise, strong project coordination skills, and the ability to mentor and direct field crews — while also serving as a primary client contact and contributing to departmental quoting and estimating.

Key Responsibilities

Field & Technical Leadership

  • Lead structured cabling installation crews on commercial, government, and industrial projects, ensuring all work meets or exceeds industry standards (BICSI, TIA/EIA, NEC).
  • Install, terminate, and test Cat6, Cat6A, Cat8 40GBs and fiber optic cabling systems (single-mode and multi-mode).
  • Read and interpret project blueprints, CAD drawings, and riser diagrams to plan and coordinate cable routing and infrastructure layout.
  • Supervise, train, and mentor junior technicians and apprentices on proper installation techniques and safety practices.
  • Coordinate with project managers, general contractors, and other trades to ensure efficient job site workflow.
  • Perform OTDR testing, certification testing (Fluke/DSX), and copper continuity testing; generate and review test reports.
  • Install and dress ladder racks, cable trays, conduit, J-hooks, and pathway infrastructure.
  • Terminate patch panels, keystone jacks, MDF/IDF frames, and fiber enclosures.
  • Maintain accurate documentation including as-builts, labeling, and material logs.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and company policies on job sites at all times.
  • Identify scope changes or field issues and communicate promptly to the project manager.
  • Manage tools, equipment, and materials inventory for assigned projects.

Client Relations

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for project managers, maintaining professional relationships and ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction throughout project lifecycles.
  • Respond to client inquiries, provide on-site consultations, and communicate project status updates in a timely and professional manner.
  • Represent Modern Media professionally on job sites and in client-facing settings, reinforcing the company's reputation for quality and reliability.

Quoting & Estimating

  • Collaborate with the sales and project management teams to develop accurate material and labor quotes for structured cabling projects.
  • Conduct site surveys and walkthroughs to assess project scope, identify infrastructure requirements, and gather information needed for estimating.
  • Review and validate quotes for accuracy prior to submission, ensuring profitability targets and competitive pricing are maintained.

Required Qualifications

  • Certification (required): BICSI Installer 2 – Copper
  • Certification (required): BICSI Installer 2 – Fiber Optic
  • Actively working toward BICSI Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) or certification.
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in a lead or supervisory structured cabling role.
  • Minimum 7 years of total structured cabling field experience.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Cat6/Cat6A/Cat 8 copper termination, testing, and certification.
  • Expert-level proficiency in single-mode and multi-mode fiber splicing, termination, and OTDR testing.
  • Proficiency with Fluke DSX, OptiFiber Pro, or equivalent copper and fiber certification equipment.
  • Strong knowledge of TIA-568, TIA-569, TIA-606 standards and NEC cabling requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage field crews of 3–10 personnel.
  • Demonstrated experience in client-facing roles with strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret project scopes, RFPs, and construction documents for estimating purposes.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Teams, Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Valid Florida driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass a background check (required for federal and government site access).

Preferred Qualifications

  • BICSI Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) or actively working toward certification.
  • Experience working on healthcare, government, or Department of Defense (DoD) projects.
  • Prior experience preparing structured cabling quotes or estimates using a PSA or estimating platform.
  • Familiarity with vendor pricing portals and distributor relationships (e.g., Anixter, Graybar, ScanSource).
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
  • Experience with OSP (outside plant) fiber installation.
