Position Overview
The Journeyman plays a critical role in the execution of live events and exhibit installations. This position is responsible for coordinating labor, maintaining safety and quality standards, and ensuring timely and successful events build under the direction of the Production Supervisors.
Working in close collaboration with Project Managers, Account Executives, clients, and other stakeholders, the Journeyman is a hands-on leader who demonstrates clear communication, professionalism, and the ability to solve problems in fast-paced environments. This position requires a proactive mindset, strong leadership skills, and a high level of technical proficiency across all aspects of event production.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Execution
- Lead and manage internal and external labor crews during event set-up, show operation, and dismantle.
- Ensure all production deadlines and quality expectations are met while maintaining client satisfaction.
- Collaborate with Production Supervisors to execute production plans and respond to on-site needs and changes.
- Proactively identify and resolve potential issues before they impact event timelines or deliverables.
- Maintain a professional and solutions-focused environment, shutting down negative or toxic behavior with respect and authority.
Client & Team Collaboration
- Communicate and coordinate effectively with Account Executives, Project Managers, Warehouse Managers, clients, exhibitors, and show staff.
- Represent Modern Expo in a professional manner while working with vendors, venues, and clients.
- Ensure all production activities align with client specifications and event objectives.
Operational Proficiency
- Interpret and execute floor layouts for accurate installation of pipe and drape, booths, furniture, and custom structures.
- Safely and efficiently load/unload equipment from trucks and trailers, securing all items per protocol.
- Set up, troubleshoot, and manage basic A/V and electrical components.
- Execute high-quality installation of carpet, drape, table vinyl, and skirting.
- Construct and install custom exhibit structures (e.g., AGAM, BeMatrix, AluVision) and graphics.
- Ensure all tools and equipment are operated in accordance with safety guidelines and best practices.
Safety & Compliance
- Always uphold safety protocols to protect all personnel, property, and equipment.
- Report hazardous conditions or safety incidents immediately to Production Supervisors.
- Maintain certifications and operate equipment (forklifts, high lifts, box trucks, etc.) safely and legally.
- Drive responsibly and in accordance with all applicable laws and company policies.
Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement
- Provide timely updates to Production Supervisors regarding progress, challenges, and crew performance.
- Solve on-site problems independently and escalate when appropriate.
- Contribute ideas for improving production processes and overall team efficiency.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Proven leadership experience in event production, trade shows, or exhibit installations.
- Strong understanding of installation and dismantling processes, equipment, and tools.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting event layouts and construction drawings.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong time-management, adaptability, and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to travel and maintain open availability for extended shifts and out-of-state events.
- Clean driving record required.
